Retrofit project, Adaptive Headlights?

So I'm starting a retrofit project, not sure how long its going to take nor if its even going to work. I've done some searching and I have yet to see anyone do this yet. Since I work at a GM
dealer I see many vehicle with a plethora of problems, through my venture here I've been able to aquire two Cadillac srx headlamps. Sadly I thought I had the same kind but it turns out the pass side I have is a reg projector lens, (halogen, no adaptive lighting) but the dirver side is a hid unit with adaptive lighting (adjusts level and moves left/right depending on steering angle and speed). I plan on using this setup in my cobalt headlight retrofit project. unless I see a easy way of doing it I wont worry about the automatic level, just mostly want the left/right automation. Wiring is the easy part for me, I've figured out how to get the Headlamp module to work the lights correctly. The biggest problem for me is mouting the system in the cobalt lamp. So if anyone has done this or knows someone who has Id appreciate the passage of knowledge. Inputs are welcome. ill post as I work on it, no idea how often or how long but we'll see.

If it works for the driver side then ill just have to wait till I get a pass headlamp from a srx with adaptive hid's which shouldn't take to long (only took a bout 4 months to get the two I have and I see these headlamps broken a lot through the shop), either one will come through the shop that needs replacing or ill jack a broken one when someone brings a wrecked srx through the body shop.

No one has TMK.
Get to it!

Sub, sounds very interesting let us know your progress!

This. It's a cool concept, but the autoleveling I think would be easier to get to work than the turn side to side

Some pics of the srx headlight with the adaptive lighting setup inside with full left and right movement. Also shows how the headlights autolevel, im not sure if I will be able to do since I think I wont be able to find a way to mount the motor.

The side to side should fit since its built into the cage that holds the projectors. I think anyway.

This is how the dining table was last night

Woo! Gm parts ftw! As you can tell in my sig I have 2 SRX hid projectors I got from a warranty job. Both headlights "inop" but the only thing that didn't work was the light tube on one side, pissed about that cuz I wanted to try to incorporate that but oh well.

Good luck getting any motor to work tho cuz the up/down goes through suspension sensors then through a control module which then controls the motors. I assume the left/right does the same.

I still have yet to install them but so far all I'm missing is the motocontrol harness from TRS and I'm gonna pot the ballasts.

Any plans on adding clear lenses?

Edit: Fyi if you don't wanna wait for another srx, the retrofit source sells G37 sedan projectors for $60 in their Closeout section. They're exactly the same with a small tweak in the cutoff shield that you'd have to dremel off. Those are a gamble tho since there's no warranty and sometimes they can have broken pieces but it's worth a mention.

Just realized when I post from the mobile site it doesn't use my sig >.>

royce777 08-19-2015 08:20 PM

how will you get the left/right to work with the steering? I've always wanted to do this

alerosaint 08-19-2015 09:30 PM

Sound interesting and fun

I wonder what sends the commands for movement.. BCM or the motor works off a discrete from the steering sensor?

ECaulk 08-19-2015 10:05 PM

You can do it with separate control systems you just have to put an indicator on the steering shaft or steering system. Then scale the output to dictate a certain amount movement in the headlight motor. Its some semi serious yet simple electronic engineering

How many wires is it? I put the AFS set in a cobalt light. When it was time to wire. I could not figure out how to control all 24 wires from it. Because it had up and down and left to right movement. Was horrible.
Also there is a tilt module you can use to make the projector turn. It's been done on bikes and the same tilt module can be used for the car. Just wired diff. To the clock spring.

From what ive read the headlamp control module is built into the pass headlamp on the srx, it uses suspension sensors for the auto level but for the afl it uses yaw rate, vehicle speed, and steering angle which it obtains over the gmlan from the ebcm and pscm. Im not to concerned with autolevel really, just afl. Theoretically if the hdm is hooked up to gmlan it will obtain the information for afl regardless that its coming from a 08 ebcm and pscm. Only way to find out is try, either way if it doesn't work with the srx hdm, ill look into the setup that bikes use or build a module that uses the steering sensor and speed sensor. Just tap in anolog style.

After a good bit of dremeling its open finally. it looks like it will fit, not sure how to mount it yet though.

The control module is behind the driver kick panel

Your oven isn't big enough? I hope you get it figured out! It's nice having to wait for all the pieces to come since there's all kinds of time to experiment in but it sucks ass having to wait cuz I wanna get mine done now! But in the meantime I've been tuning them to get the best possible output I can get. No way I'm even gonna bother with the adjuster motors so kudos to you!

Kolt 08-20-2015 03:58 PM

Hmmm looked at component locater and it does show its over there, I just skimmed through D&O and it says there the afl module is selfcontained in the pass headlamp. Wonder how much I could get one of those modules from the junkyard for.

Didn't want to take a chance and overheat the motors and at the time I couldn't get the harness out.

Hmm there wasn't anything extra in either of my headlights that weren't in the other. But I looked through the wiring diagram and the yellow wires from the ballasts go to the headlight module but I have no idea what that purpose it serves

looking at the wire diagram and connector end views it shows there is a local logic network between the motor control in the headlamp and headlamp module. do you have any spare parts
from yours you don't need? specifically the afl motor assembly.
