shift knob...

alright, quicky question. i'm tired of the stock knob, i don't want the hurst (i really don't mind the stock shifter. i have the hurst, but i don't have any interest in installing it). i have no problems finding a way to get the stock shaft threaded. my question is, by removing the reverse lockout, would does anyone know if i'd be able to install this knob? i'm liking it a lot, and i'm pretty sure it's possible. just wanting to make sure it is. heh.

and with the stock shifter, how would i go about removing the reverse lockout, while still having no problems getting into and out of reverse?

When you pull the shifter out of the car you can remove the reverse lockout and its spring. That hunk of plastic is all there is to it. There's no safety switches or anything like that; a tab on the lockout just fits a slot in the cage that holds the shifter in place.

i found when installing the twm shifter that when you remove the lockout, you have way way too much play from left to right.. enough to go too far when shifting in first or reverse.. i hate the lockout and i want a jdm style knob, but i dont feel very comfortable with the amount of play

okay, thanks for the help. maybe i'll talk to the dealership and see if there's a way to remove the lockout without getting too much play. i really wish changing the shift knob wasn't so annoying in these cars!

just to post a little update on this, i tried installing my hurst on friday, and ran into issues with the set screw. so right now i have the stock shifter mostly back in. i say mostly because, with the plans to get the hurst back in after a little work on it, i didn't reinstall everything on the stock shifter, which includes the reverse lockout. i notice no additional play, and the feel (aside from using the metal rod to shift instead of any type of comfortable knob... lol) is exactly the same, so in ddsscobalt's case, maybe it's just a cable adjustment.

once i get the hurst back in, i'm probably acutally going to look to get it threaded, and maybe have a couple rings installed so that i'd have a place to mount the boot, incase i'm not too fond of the hurst compared to stock. i'll post pics of the stock if anyone wants them.
