Shifter boot replacement

I'm hoping someone on here can chime in. I have a BPS short shifter in my 08 cobalt ss, I'm trying to replace my shift boot because the one on there is falling apart. I got the base of the boot off but the issue I'm running into is that the top section Is to tight to fit over the reverse lockout ring. Any ideas? It doesnt seem as if the reverse ring pulls off and I dont really wanna force the new boot over if I cut the old one off.

cheers

There is a zip tie holding it on to the lock ring, you'll need to cut it and pull it out then it should slide off.

Edit:
Good write up here. It's a TWM but it's basically the same for everything
