Wing hole options? Ideas/suggestions wanted!
Wing hole options? Ideas/suggestions wanted!
Im doing a SS/SC wing removal tomorrow, did I mention I really hate that &*#@# thing? Anyway, having searched every wing and wang removal thread I could find I still have some questions. Great info found here, btw. My question is what to temporarily do about the holes? Someone mentioned they put some sort of vinyl tape over them. Another used some kind of rubber stoppers. Where do you get this stuff? Is there one particular type of tape that works better? My car is Ultra Silver, I hate that damn spoiler so much I'm tempted to just stick some duct tape over the holes once I get it off. I needs something to tide me over till I have the $$ for the body work. Any ideas/suggestions welcome.
Anyone looking for an Ultra Silver SS/SC wing keep an eye on the classifieds as I will offer it up here first before placing on Ebay.

Suggestion...wait on removing the wing for a bit. This weekend should be a good one for car sales...go to all the local chevy dealers in a 30 mi radius, especially the one you bought the car from. Explain that you would love to swap the trunk lid out for one from a base Cobalt, or maybe an SS with the low profile wing...perhaps they know of a recent customer of theirs that would be interested in such a thing?....or better still, if the dealer would like to pimp up one of his existing base silver Cobalt coupes...?
Remember to swap the lock cylinder, and make sure your trunklid (and car) is spotless, shiny and waxed for this to go over...
You may have to rebuy the SS decals for your new trunk, of course...

Well, I just thought of something else...since it is the long weekend, it is possible that key people in authority will not be at the dealership to agree to this...so if they say there is no one here that can make that decision, collect the name of the person who can...
All of this should be done IN PERSON, not on the phone. Its easy to say "no" to someone over the phone. Tougher if they see your very clean car....and if you are VERY polite. Expect a lot of rejection, of course...but they only have to agree once....
Tell us if you are successful, and the salesmanship tactic that worked...

A little history..... to make a long story short. I told my salesman I hated the spoiler and he told me "that's the way all SS/SC's come, it can't be changed." I found out the next day you could delete the spoiler or get a lo pro as a no charge option on the 07's. I was pissed I wasn't informed of this. Went back and told the salesman if I had known that I would have ordered an 07 and gotten the car the way I wanted it. After going a few rounds with him and the sales manager I was told the following BS:
The chevy.com website is wrong, it's not run by Chevy but by a third party and you can't trust everything you see on there.
Just because it's an option doesn't mean you can get it. Wtf?
The sales manager was even more adept at pilling on the BS, I won't bore you with details. Bottom line they offered to swap out the SS/SC wing for a lo-pro, provided I cough up $150. I told them what they could do with that offer. I told my salesman to pass the word at the dealership that if any new car buyer wanted to swap to give them my name and number. It's coming off tomorrow.....

For $150, it would be worth it, especially if they are doing all the labor. Best still would see if they could do the swap on a base coupe, so there would be NO wing. Stealth car.
$150 is a fair deal if they do everything. (Heck, if you had to do the labor, its STILL worth it.)
Go for it! You could have a plain back end, which is something you could never have ordered on an 07 anyway. I think they were right that you can't delete it on an 07 SS/SC, you can just get the low pro spoiler instead of the big one...but you still end up with a spoiler....
If they do it, you'll end up with a dealer install...so no leaks, and a perfectly clean look. Dump all the spoilers.

The offer was lo-pro for SS/SC wing swap for $150. For a no charge option on an 07. I spoke with a few other salesmen at the dealership, all were quite unaware/uniformed that it was even an option. The sales manager looked it up in some mysterious book he kept in his desk , confirmed it was option on the 07, and then a heaping helping of BS followed. I'll betcha you could order a spoiler delete on an 07. The only stick I can wield is the GM customer survey I just got in the mail today. It seems very important to them that everything be checked "completely satisfied." I can see a trip to the dealership tomorrow with this in hand...... Worth a shot.
If they do go for it with a base coupe (and I would hope they do...there has to be some sucker out there that would take a base coupe with the big wing), remember to test the trunk lock with your key before you go...you don't want to forget the lock cylinder swap....
The back of the trunk might have the LS or LT badges on it...so be careful if you take them off for the SS. Don't want to ruin the paint...(or you can leave them in place for "Extra deception", but you are also wrecking your resale value on the car...and its bet to take off badging before the glue sets for months) While on the lot, you might want to note the exact position of the SS badge on a standard trunk. If you decide to put them on...

Finding someone willing to swap would be best but I can't stand the looks of it and want it off ASAP. I don't think deleting the spoiler is going to effect resale value. Might try a round carriage bolt/rubber washer combo or see if I can't find the vinly tape others have used. Thanks for suggestions.
Spoiler off, with no visible holes won't ruin resale...but rubber grommets and vinyl stickers will...
Body shop will cost a few hundred to make it right...use the dealer first, try hard to do the swap. If you still pull the thing off and leave holes, don't sell the wing...keep it for when you sell the car...you are probably going to have to put it back on to make it stock again.
Body shop will probably charge you over $300 for plugging the holes, and will have to have your car for a while for painting...you will be much better off swaping with the dealer for $150.

After viewing the pics of the spoiler holes in the "Wang removal" thread again I'm reconsidering. I'll take Forseti's advice and see if a trade can be worked out with another Cobalt owner or have the dealer put the lo-pro spoiler on for the $150.
Try to sell the idea of them increasing the appeal of a base Coupe...plus they will be able to mark up a base coupe for a few extra $ with the wing they never paid for...profit is slim on a base coupe, so hopefully this will help the dealer, and appeal to them. You are going to have to be a good salesman...
If they do not want to do anything with existing cars on the lot, ask for customers that have recently bought...or, if they have a color match on the lot, ask to be informed when THAT car sells, and if they could contact the buyer to see if THAT person would swap AFTER the dealer has sold the car....
You may still have to offer to pay for two hours of service tech work to do the swap. Worth it. Even if you say you can do it yourself, you may want them to do it...in case there are problems later....this is probably a necessity if you are swaping with a car the dealership does not own, but that the dealership contacted for you...
Then, some day when you see a base LS or LT go by with a giant wing on the back that matches your color...it was probably your part....

Dude that GM survey is extremely important to them. I work sales for a Chevy dealer and every Saturday the managers go over that crap, it affects how much money they get from GM. What you should have done is returned the car to them, you have that option for a few days after purchase, then go to another dealer and custom order yours with the options that you want. Since its probably to late for that, just give the worst possible score on the survey, the important questions are #10 and #14 and send it in. You should go in to the dealership and sit down with the salesman and tell em, give me the no cost wing delete option and I'll give you a good survey. They say no, just mark the worst check for #10 and #14 and just walk out.
Oh and for you guys saying tell them they can sell a base cobalt for more money with the SS/SC wing on it, it doesnt work. I tried that with my manager, but after factoring in the cost of paying the union mechanics to do the swap, it doesnt really work out in their favor. Best I could get is if I payed for the labor they'd do it.

This dealership had a base Cobalt with the SS/SC wing, leather interior, and some other options. The funny thing is when I first asked whether I could swap out my spoiler they told me the SS/SC spoiler wouldn't fit on any other Cobalt model. I pointed out exhibit A in their own lot......
Hehe, they still have it in stock. Here's the pic from their website:
$150 for labor is probably fair. What's unreasonable from my viewpoint is that I wasn't informed that I had an option had I went with an 07, at no cost.
We're not quite there, this was a verbal agreement with my salesman over the phone. He seemed confident we could get it done. He now knows a positive response on my GM customer survey is dependent on his following thru. There is the Sales Managers approval and then estimated labor cost to be worked out. So far, so good. The salesman told me Monday he will have an answer. I'm not "de-spoilered" yet.
here is the vinyl temporary fix I used.... go to a place that does vinyl lettering (Signs Now) or just a sign lettering supply shop. you can match a vinyl thats close to your color.... and they do have metallics. A few brands of the vinyl off hand are AVERY , SO CAL. You might have to buy a yard if the sales person is a butthead... but, it's worth it for a close color match and extra material if ever necessary.
internet search: sign vinyl + (your location)
buy the better quality vinyl as it will hold up better to the elements.
Cut 1" circles to cover the small holes and 1-1/2" circles to cover the large ones.
The sign vinyl place can cut your sheet in the circles.... but you'll pay a fee
I have had my vinyl on for 2 months now.... no leakage, no peeling, looks 100X better than the wing
vinyl looks better than bolts w/ large washers and can be replaced.
If I can't find a swap for my wing.... I'll just stay w/ the vinyl as you only notice from above
looking from the side there is no site of the holes.

Called my salesman on 9/13, informed me the trunk swap was a no go, they were worried the paint on the trunks would not match from car to car. I was pissed that something could not be worked out after 3 weeks. Since it was Wednesday the dealership was open late, I went straight up there after work. Finally spoke with the sales manager who was the first person there who actually seemed interested in making me a satisfied customer. He said there would be no problem in getting the spoiler swapped and to make an appointment and he would pick up 1/2 the labor cost. Got it swapped out yesterday, they took a spoiler off an 07 SS. Better yet, when I picked my car up I was told there was no charge. Finally!
