Just because a 9 in wide wheel can fit a 275 tire, wont that make it slightly less responsive? According to tire rack 9in wide wheels can fit 245-275. The cobalt Time attack ran 245s with 9in wide wheels. Do they know something we don’t?
Quite honestly, unless you're running competitively, you can run extremely fast on just stock wheels and cheap 225/235 tires. For track folks, going to a really wide tire does have detriments. You're going to slow down your straight away speeds, and it's heavier too. The TA car ran 245 Hoosiers, iirc, which are extremely sticky, and were probably plenty of tire for the LSJ. Even with an LNF, if you're talking about a big track, you shouldn't get into many situations where you could spin the tires (with sane tuning). Generally (but not always) if you can spin the tires coming out of the turn, it's likely you should have been carrying more speed through the turn.

For autox? Different story. It happens at low speed, so big fat sticky tires win.

It should fit under the rear with no issues. I know some guy's have issues with spacers but I've run them on several cars over the years with no issues. What are your thoughts?
I've never really messed with spacers before other than just little 5mm stuff. Everyone loves to scream "not safe" but I have never personally heard of any incidents. Your idea makes total sense to me. Although if your thinking of going with the team dynamics wheels a +45 is the highest offset that I know of you'll have to give them a call or email ( paul@teamilluminata.com is the guy I talked with, knew his stuff) Worst case on the +45 in the rear you may need to add another .5* camber and/or roll the fender. But, SHOULD clear no problem.

Rally, I would think the Ultraleggeras would depend on your tire choice. Actually, isn't Maven running a 245/40-18 on them with Pedders??

I think the biggest issue with spacers are guy's that put them on and don't put in longer studs. I was using a wheel calculator and with a 30 mm offset in the front with a 9 the wheel should stick out 1.2 inches over stock. jboogie can you actually see the top of the front tire when viewed from straight above the fender? I'm now on Pedders with -2 degrees and am having a hard time seeing a 9 fit even though you did it. I was going to order Forgestar F14's in a 18x9.

He was running my old wheels with my old Direzzas on pedders, which was the same setup I ran with them and they rubbed, and with the sportlines they rubbed worse.

But last time I said something to you about them rubbing you tried to act like I was some one who didn't know.

Cause you didn't know.

Steddy:
Yeah...that wheel fitment is fail.

Even with stretched fenders you won't clear your struts...OH and really...big 245 tires(Direzzas) lose a lot of turn in feel(off center initial bite) from tread flex.

That is actually what you said and you were wrong on all accounts.

The car was .3 seconds off FTD in a 76 car field last weekend, guess I'm doing something right.

Just barely, But this is only at 1.3* still havent had time to go down and get a decent alignment. With another .7* is would pull the tire in another 10-12mm and fully tuck it. Even as it sits there has been no rub up front, even after my first event.

Quite messing around and run 18x10's with 255/30/18 tires. Hoosier is wide as 275, and sits same as our stock tires. Run a wider wheel and stop sidewall flex.

Rears are on my car now, fronts will be on this coming week.
I can tell you for a fact, that 225's are not enough, 255's will be enough for Track Days and Autox. Also with lower profile the tire will warm up quicker.

So, your going 275s or 255s? What's your offset and suspension setup? and what wheels?

The rear is a little different. Very hard cornering it has not rubbed yet but I will know more after the first track day. BUT on big dips a higher speeds the fender lip does contact the tire. That mark on the tire helped me make a measurement and it looks like it would take another 19mm to tuck the tread width behind the fender. If this becomes an issue I'll order some new wheels in a +45 and sell the other 2. I could bring the top of the tire in another 8-10mm with another .5* of camber with some shims but I don't want to do that for clearance issues just to mess up the balance of the car.
The plan is to be fully STX prepped in 2 years, it's gonna be a fun ride
What if you roll the fenders just a bit? Seems like 19mm isn't to much to roll and help clear the tire. PS. I am a newb with all this tire and suspension stuff and trying to learn. I am def. watching this thread as I really want to get bigger tires before I get any more power then the GSM1 makes. Tired of spinning tires at AutoX already.

rolling the fenders is just turning up the inside lip, you mean pulling the fenders. That isn't allowed in my class.

OK, opened up the bottom strut mount some more, I'm up to 1.7* camber now and that leaves only 4mm between the tire and strut! I had 1.7 degrees last year with unmodified strut holes, thinking maybe I moved them out on the strut tower more after installing the springs?

4mm? Yikes. It's gonna rub under load. It's one advantage of coilovers. They typically give more room, not that you can run them.

My E-Stock MR2 has 14x6 Kodiaks on the front with a 225/50/14 710 and only 2 mm to the strut. the only contact I have had is a very slight rub, just enough to polish the paint on the strut and a shiny stripe on the back side of the tire. From what others have said I understand the wheel itself may flex under load as there is really no load on the top end of the tire. I've run the car hard for two years with this setup. I think your OK, I hope your OK because my wheels are on the way and the spacing should be similar to yours. I chickened out and went with 18x8.5's instead of 9's but with the same backspace. I just wanted to make sure they tucked.

When are they supposed to be here or when do I think they will arrive? They say 3-4wks and I think more like 6-7 wks. I need them before the Canadian Nationals in September so I should be good

You should really invest in a GoPro HD. It is great for reviewing your runs so you can make adjustments on your run accordingly.

nice! Looks like the rear has some + camber with those wide wheels lol. Looks damn hot tho.

wondering how competitive the SS could be in STX at nationals.. STX always seems like a toss up since i have been autocrossing modding the cobalt would be fun.

I've wondered that myself about nationals. Pretty sure I was about a second off the guy that won STX in dixie (I think but no results posted yet) in his fully prepped RX8. He came in 27th of 43 at nationals in 2010 and a second back would have put me right behind him in 28th. I've run 2 events since I ran against him and have gotten MUCH faster as I adapt to the new setup. Ya I'm stretching it pretty thin but its the only gauge I have right now. lol Not bad for a very under prepped car.
