autocross setups for 2012?

I'm running in D stock and will be finally using r-comps at the next event. Running v710's on some drag dr33s.

Looks like we'll be able to change the front OR rear sway bar next year in stock class. What do you guys think about that? I don't have a lot of experience with these cars yet, but I would think a stiffer rear bar would be a good idea in any class.

So what are your plans?

Make sure the wheels are only 7.5", not 8".

Regarding the proposal (has it been approved yet?), I have to say that I don't really like the proposal. Stock classes should stay close to stock. Letting people fool with the rear bar just causes problems for folks that are learning, and folks that go fast will just start spending a lot of bucks, and I'm sure there will be other problems caused by this, like subframes tearing, escalation by reinforcing, protests of said reinforcement, etc. As much as i enjoy modding, leave the stock classes alone. Reading the proposal, it looks like John's bars would be allowed, so if it's passed, run the hardcore or XXX.

Oh well, I have no say in the matter. My SCCA membership's been expired for years now.

I completely agree with you. I was just curious what the thoughts were in regards to possibly being able to run a bigger rear bar and just what people were planning for next season.

Wheels are good...

Camber (strut mod, -1.8* max is legal), tires, drive. Wouldn't touch anything else until you have a couple events under your belt on the A6s or V710s. I would also go with A6s if you can. PM me for a cheap used source of 245/35r18s.

This was my 1st season on r comps and it was interesting. Finished 15th at nationals and all I had was koni rears and r comps. Not sure what my plan is for 2012 yet. Im not sure if a rear bar will help or hurt, I'm guessig on concrete it will help but like other say. Learn the car 1st then mod

Also if you are looking I have 6 total hoosier A6s from 2011 season. 2 of them have 18 runs on them and still have some good life left. Other 2 were on the rear for all the events I had on r comps, I think about 24 runs total. Good life as we since the rear doesn't do much lol. Then the last 2 have 12 total runs but ate showing cords. All from te concrete at nationals.

I wonder where david has been on here? lol

Right now my 2012 season is up in the air, I have a possible S2000 STR ride next year. If that falls throuh Ill be running the cobalt and working on some different sway bar setups. This last season was a solid 1st year on rcomps learnign so I feel i have a good understanding to start modding if needed.

Rear sway bars allowed in 2012? Haven't read that yet. Not even sure where the logic comes into play about being able to change the front in stock class nevermind both. Oh well no longer aplies to me, I'm back to hating pax in ssm

My 02. Front about 1/16 toe out total, 2.5-2.8 neg camber. Rear run XXX bar, front, see what John says. Shocks either go Koni, or high end. Since we have FWD I would not go with heaver bar up front. Let the car roll and grip, however with the back stiff you can still get good handling. Try different setups as far as shocks to get the front and rear to work together but still transition as quickly as possible. I would run the 245 in front then start with 225, then 215 then 205 if needed to get the rear to rotate slightly.

Just my 02. Next year I will be going all out in DSP, we will see how the slowbalt works.

Everyones gonna think I'm crazy but at one event I ran I had a VERY fast co-driver and on day 2 he suggested dropping the front sway bar. I told him he was crazy and went on about a strut suspension and camber curves and blah, blah, blah. You know what? The front end grip was absolutely amazing. The course changed on the second day so I had not verified the changes back to back. Was it faster? Maybe, maybe not, it could have been the added front grip and increased straight line traction playing tricks on me. But, if I were in stock class I would seriously consider finding the smallest base model cobalt front bar and trying it. The inside rear wheels was a good 16" off the ground, lol.

Just sayin, think outside the box or else your only gonna be as fast as everyone else.

SMF again. Possibly going back down to the 18mm front sway from teh 24mm, maybe go up in the back from a 1" to something bigger. Hopefully running 225W R comp tires, and possibly looking into Koni's or coilovers, since the FE5's I have on her now are too soft.

My brother and I decided to go back to FSP in our Neon and fully develop it. The tire bill is the main reason.

If we were to stay in DS we would most likely run the V710s and not the Hoosiers.

With the rear sway-bar allowance I anticipate DS to be dominated by the WRXs next year. When I say dominate I mean kill the class. I think it will be that much of a help to those cars especially with slalom heavy courses which is the WRX weak point right now IMO.

I don't even want to think of the added cost that is going to be incurred to install custom speedway style bars in some of the cars.

Totally off subject (kind of), I drove an SSM S2000 CR in Vegas a few weeks ago - supercharged, Stage 4 clutch, racing seat, removable steering wheel, better wheels/tires, upgraded brake pads, pro corner balanced - WOW! what a ride! Even on the Toyo 888 tires they had on the car, it handled like a dream! Exceedingly fast, power whenever you wanted it, great brakes, and the ability to gently stroke the throttle and get the rear end out whenever it made sense. It was a rocket. If I could have purchased it on the spot, I would have.

Here are pics of different tire sizes from 225/245/255/285/305/315's as well as weight between stock wheel and tire to 315. Notice with a heavy wheel the weight diff from stock 7.5 with 225 tire to 18x11 with 315 is only a couple pounds. Was running 285's on front, want to go 315's in front this year. Look at the difference in rubber on the road from 285 to 315. Also looking to use lighter wheel.
I learn as I go.

Just to clarify, the strut camber mod is legal for stock class? Are there details on how to do this?

My plans are, less weight, more powar, hole new rear suspension. And then save up for the 315 a6's. This is for m ESP mustang of course btw. Won the novice championship and my class unofficially, now want to see if I can do better than 24th in the overall pax for a season

Strut camber mod

You can enlarge one of the holes that hold are strut to get more camber. Yes it is legal and done. I did not enlarge hole due to my car also being a DD. Instead I used the Ingals part that would allow me to adjust camber. I was never protested for it even though it is not technically legal. My thinking was I was running no more camber than others, or actually less than some. So I do not think any of the good drivers would protest me for running less camber than they do. And the camber bolt is more stable as a DD than enlarging the hole.

Hope that helps.

I dont recall you being allowed to substitute or modify parts in order to be able to meet the factory specs in stock rules. I guess you have to check the book before you do it.

Over in the jbody world next season is going to be my 1st on r-comps. 275 R6 in the front 205 A6 in the back. I may find the need of a wing to balance out the splitter, the last event of the year was a spin fest when I was testing that out. Until I discovered a crack brake rotor and drove a bone stock R package miata on old RE11's the rest of the day.Off season changes are also including rear disks and ebc reds all around, and hopefully I'll get the LSD in. After that its engine build in the middle of the summer, most likely during nats because my club normally has its longest beak then.

Yes you can hallow out the strut cause it's in the m handbook. You can't use Camber bolts on this car for stock classes.

From Sunday. I was just running my street tires and took 1st in PAX. Going to call around tomorrow for some more camber. Hoosiers are in the garage and I'm signed up for the Dixie tour. I need to learn how to perfect the course in 3 runs instead of 6 or 7.

Pax Final Results, #2 - February, Event 2 - 12 Feb 12

Feb 2012 SCCA Wiregrass - YouTube

I left the camera on while working the course and eating lunch so I didn't get any of my afternoon runs.

Thanks! I "grew up" autocrossing a stock integra on 30 second courses in the D.C. area, so I know where you are coming from...
