Exhaust Cut-Outs ???
I saw a video of a guy with an SS/SC and he had an exhaust cut-out. They sound kinda cool and supposed to give you a little more power, but are they really worth it? I dont know much about it, so I'm just wondering what people have to say.

It couldnt possibly add any more power than a regular cat-back. Its more of a secret weapon type thing. For the track and whatever. Woo hoo some secret weapon!

An exhaust cut-out is basically an big exhaust leak. An exhaust leak gets rid of restriction because the exhaust is diverting out the cut out area but at the same time, it can effect your velocity. So yes, it's beneficial in the sense that you have less backpressure being created but it may effect the velocity.
As far as usefulness, I would honestly just upgrade your cat-back system. It's hugely beneficial on turbocharged vehicles because the backpressure is a negative effect on the turbine. This is also why you see people with open downpipes...same effect. |
You can have cut-outs that are bolted in. Those are cheap but a pain in the ass to take out and put back in. But... those are really cheap and if you need just a little more power, might be worth considering.
That said, I would never do it myself. |
lol i put a manual exhaust cut out on my saturn, it was a blast to fool with people, 1 second sounds like a regular car, the next, its louder than a honda withno muffler. Just for kicks though.

When I was looking at them, they kinda did look like a cheap gimick... kinda like putting shiny hub caps on your rims just to get the look instead of actually putting real rims lol! oh, haha, reminds me of those people with their beaters who go to Wal-mart and buy those plastic spinners and put them on! LOL |

exhaust cut outs, from what i have read, are mainly meant for a turbo application, so a person can keep an exhaust sounding like stock, but then open the cut out for a large power gain because it will allow the turbo to spool faster. I have heard of some heavily modified srt-4s gaining 20-30hp just from sticking one of these on, but they are also a turbo app.

On a turbo application, it's less of an importance of exhaust velocity (well when in boost pressure), but the less backpressure helps with response in spooling. |
