ya its not just metal detectors. guys get patted down and have to empty out their pockets on all articles of clothing, girls get their purses searched and then you walk through a metal detector and sometimes you get swept with a hand wand metal detector. but ya its the bouncers that are letting people in the back that are the only cause now for any club stuff that happens in the club. that and there is usually a few cop cars that are sitting out front as well as a bunch that patrol the area.

My Input -

The Metal Detectors for those of you that want the back story is as such... (I used to work as a bouncer here in Calgary). Basically the clubs (most of them) are owned by a guy named Paul Vickers... while never formally charged its pretty safe to say that he has some strong ties to the less than desirable crowds... About 5 years ago a local hot spot on the corner of 4th Street and 10 Ave SW called "The Drink" was the scene of a very public and violent crime... shortly after throwing out 4 drunk patrons (I believe they were of asian decent) the bouncers were outside and were attacked, they were stabbed repeatedly and 2 died at the scene, one on the sidewalk, one on the stairs and the 3rd was able to stumble back into the front door and proceeded to almost bleed out all over the front lobby/coat check.

The club subsequently closed and at the time this was the MOST violent attack at a club in years (aside from the regular violence that used to transpire at the "Back Alley" but then again that was controlled by the Hells Angels so it was never publicized - more on that in a minute).

Vickers was under huge amounts of public scrutiny for this incident and the fact that this transpired at his club raised many questions of the safety of Calgary's night life... as a result he chose to "TAKE A STAND" (more to cover his ass and take the heat off) and install metal detectors and wands in all his clubs... also spot checks and searches are authorized on site and all patrons are informed of this when the enter the club (there used to be a sign by the front door).

Vickers then reopened what was "THE DRINK" after a quick remodel and new coat of paint to get rid of the blood soaked front entrance under the new name of "TANTRA" (this is where I worked for a bit).

Now here is the problem with this, while I do not claim to know who does what etc. I know from seeing with my own eyes that it honestly comes down to who you have working in the place - the staff are more than willing to open a side door for a buddy or get tipped big by a high roller than have them come in through normal security... it happened alot and well its no wonder that its been an ineffective strategy.

Hell 2 weeks after I quit there were 3 raids within that week - one for a asian dude doing coke right off the bar tables, one for another guy walking with a 9 mm sticking out of the front of his pants in clear view, and another for a huge bar brawl where there were weapons...

Dont get me wrong the club isnt "UNSAFE" its honestly a good place and a fun time but it does come back to the staff and people you choose to trust.

Now back to the Back Alley for a sec. That was a place that actually seemed to work... granted it was run by the Hells Angels unofficially but still... they had metal detectors there for a long time since the late 90's i believe, that being said the H.A. would park all their bikes out back near the 2nd level stage just off the dance floor and keep that door open so that members could enter with out any problems or searches... They kept their guys in check and no one started ****...

On the ocassions where someone would break out a fight and a bottle would get smashed etc. the bouncers would simple break them up and send them out that door where a waiting group of HA members would proceed to **** KICK these trouble makers and vola problem averted for next time...

This has obviously changed as well since their chapters have closed a few placed and they have chosen to take a less aggressive stance in Calgary... and this has resulted in a more tougher crowd at the Back Alley but yeah its still a good time... there will always be one or 2 tards.

No before someone goes off on me saying that bouncer violence happens etc. lets all take a look back 3 years to the Patron from "Cowboys" who was removed from the premesis via a group of bouncers and subsequently beaten out back and died as a result of his injuries...

the point is violence is out there regardless of if its a gun, knife, rock etc.

One of the other posters said it best - People Kill People... its a very unfortunate psychological drive and one that all humans are bread with - flight or fight and survival... on the flip side of that there have always and will always be people who just get off on violence...

----------------------------------

Now as for the rest of this off topic thread with back and forth belittling bullshit...

actually i found out a couple of high up bouncers at a few of the night clubs got fired for taking bribes to be let in and the such. good to know that not everyone is corrupt. and either way i still go with a group of friends as there is less chance of anyone starting anything.

Well pretty much theres only a few reasons that would happen, an independent investigator caught one, the managers wanted to show an example, or they just wanted an excuse to fire em.

Doing door you can make upwards of 200 - 300$ / night straight cash + Bar Tip Out + Wage + front door tips... can be very good coin.
