08 SS/TC...wheel hop ugh
 
I know it's been gone over before but searching around gave me no real answers. My car hops and hops at the dragstrip. So much so that i've backed out of the throttle on every street tire pass since i've been tuned. I've tried spinning on purpose just to avoid the hop but as expected the timeslips suffer. My best 60ft since being tuned has been a 2.24 and my best pass was a 13.32 at 111 with a 2.31 60ft backing out of the throttle. My last time at the track I had the footballs in the rear springs and it hopped so bad I aborted the run and drove home.

Just today I installed TTR Stop mounts on the car and went out for a ride on the street. With 235/40/18 Dunlop Star Specs and a 2500rpm clutch slip the car left fine and then it started hopping again. While it is 10x better than before it STILL hops and will hop worse at the track tomorrow night.

In my search for a fix i've found that I also need an upgraded engine mount/ingalls to possibly fix this problem. Will this finally do it? What do you drag racers use?

What kind of tuning do you have? Is your first gear torque management above 75%? On a decently sticky track this will make the car more vulnerable to wheel hop. If you can lower it down to like 60% or so it should get alot better. I was able to cut a 2.0 60 with the torque management in the 40-50% first gear so it wont hurt to back it down.

HP Tuners. I believe it was you who I talked to about this before (probably over a year ago) and I experimented with 65%, 80% and 100% in first. I made 4 passes on the 65% TM setting and the car would bog and not recover very well. It's possible I just wasn't aggressive enough on the launch for the 65% setting but I was dumping the clutch from 3000-3200rpm.

I did the TTR mount as well. It all but stopped the hop on the street, but when I put it on the track last weekend it still wanted to hop. I've heard that you need to do the TTR upper mount AND poly trans mounts. I ordered a set of poly trans mounts and should have them on by this weekend. I'll let you know if they control hop at the track or not.

You're gonna get wheel hop with street tires, end of story. You just need to find the sweet spot where you grab and don't accelerate into the wheel hop.

Those star specs are prolly a little to grippy then with the stiff sidewalls of street tires. They want to grip and not spin and there is no sidewall to take away some shock. What do you do for the air pressures?

Usually 20-22psi in the front with about 40psi in the rear

With Ottp stage 2 mounts and street tires I now have no wheel hop on the street, this summer we will see if I have any on the strip with drag radials

Actually I have not. When stock I always aired them down to 20psi and was cutting 2.06-2.09 60fts. I'm trying that same approach with the tune but not getting very far.

^x2 Last year I broke both half shafts on street tires and Ottp stage 2 tranny mounts. It was kind of my fault for giving the car too much throttle but when you are on a sticky track there is no getting away from wheel hop if you launch too hard.

Got the poly trans mounts installed just now and took it for a test drive. Of course, the cabin vibes increased, but the street wheel hop is gone. I spun it hard in first gear to try to make it hop, and it didn't! Now whether or not it hops at the track is another story. I'll let you know as soon as I get back from the track. I also noticed there isn't as much drivetrain thump when I punch it from a roll at a low RPM, which I was hoping for. With that said, I didn't use the TTR STOP mounts. I used ZZP's poly inserts. TTR's mounts may be better if they actually realign the axles, etc. I just decided to take the cheaper alternative. At any rate, the TTR upper mount and ZZP's poly trans bushings work really well together.

I hope my original post didn't come off as being too negitive. I think the STOP mounts are great and they have helped out a ton so far. I was just expecting the wheel hop to go away all together...but as some of you have said it probably won't on street tires. I'll let you guys know how I make out.

All I want is a 12.99 on street tires...is that asking too much LOL

I guess i'm just lucky or have this car dialed in on the launch(or maybe or track just sucks but works to my advantage, lol), because I get a nice spin off the line but no hop... my best 60' is a 2.09 though I ROUTINELY turn 2.1-2.2s...

and that is on street tires


and I can't say my drag strip DOESN'T cause some wheel hop, because i've saw both a CTS-V and LS2 GTO blow axles there last year, lol... the CTS-V on the 1st run down the track.....while I was racing it, lol... and I was wanting to see how our car would compare, but he didn't make it 60'......

Don't forget the other benefits that poly mounts provide, besides improving wheel hop and traction. They help eliminate engine and transmission rock, save flex pipes, improve shifts, and help get more power to the wheels.

I recieved the TTR engine mount today but I won't be able to install it until tomorrow. I'll test it out on the street tomorrow and let you guys know how I make out. If all is well i'll hit the dragstrip this friday night.
