I'm lookin to beef up my tranny, and was wondering if anyone knew if there are any upgrades avaliable? I was also wondering if the ss/SC tranny would fit in the 2.4??
Thanks

Which trans do you have? There are two for the 2.4

How do i determine which one I have?

arg i think he means auto or manual, if its a manual when looking for trans parts look for 2.2 cobalt as well since we share the same trans. Not sure about the auto. There's prolly a tq convertor somewhere out there.

I don't mean to sound mean, but, there are two kinds, manual or auto. And if you don't know which is which, you should probably leave your car alone.

Dude, i'm sure that you are just the car DOCTOR... but i just thought perhaps there were 2 editions of the SS 2.4, i have a manual. Some people have absolutely no patience, which means that they either know only so much, or just can't deal, anyways, sorry if i "offended" you. My quetion was just harmless, then you have to go and act like you engineered the ******* car.
..............Everyone else is cool, just not so much this guy

It is I who apologize. While my post wasn't meant to upset you, I can see how it could have. And on that day I was dealing with a real shit head (Wesman), so I was in a bad mood. Sorry dude.

Anyway, as far as your manual trans goes, there really isn't anything to "beef" it up. About the only thing your could do would be a better clutch. There are LSD's available, but they don't improve the strength of your trans at all.

I've been wondering how difficult it would be to swap in a F35 Getrag to replace our F23 since it's rated for so much more power. It would seem like the mounting points are the same since everyone who makes tranny mounts does not differentiate, but then I could be wrong. And aren't all the ecotec blocks the same, just bored out differently? So is it a safe bet the bellhousings are the same? We would need a new shifter, but then I would just put off buying a short throw... And as you already mentioned, clutch and flywheel... That would also give us an opportunity to have an LSD installed... Thoughts? What would some of the major obstacles be, other than finding a tranny?

EDIT G's to F's because I was baked on coedine last night to get rid of a migraine :)

You aren't going to find anything specifically for your transmission. But as far as beefing it up goes, it most certainly can be done. Consult a transmission rebuild shop.

The Izuzu tranny on my 96 Sunfire GT was beefed up internally. I bought it from a guy with a Turbo LD9 Z24 who blew the motor a week after getting it. Seeing as how it was the 3rd tranny going in, I was glad it was beefed up. The spider gears went south in the first two.

cool, thanks guys. as far as swapin with the 35... i talked to a professional and they don't think it could happen, but that still leaves a chance that it could, so i dunno, if it can happen, that's what i do

Wouldn't be any more difficult than removing or installing the same trans you have now. The PCM would be fine as it does not control 5spd manuals at all. The PCM won't know the difference in terms of the Gear ratio changes. Nice thing about electric reluctor ring speedo's on transaxles is that you can change the final drive or any gear ratio and it doesn't make a difference to speedo output or anything. Wheel size yes. Gear ratio no.

You'd need a whole donor car to grab the trans and all related trans parts from. But yeah it would bolt up and fit into place.

That's the reply I received from a GM tech I emailed on the subject of swapping in a F35 into the 2.4L SS. I've only met him once or twice but he's a super nice guy. I met him through a local message board and he really knows his shit. I specifically asked if the PCM would freak out with a different tranny there because I don't know much about this stuff.

I don't know about looking for a whole donor car... I'd be using an aftermarket short-throw, clutch and flywheel so why not just look for a tranny and order anything else (like shift cables and whatever else is needed) from GM?

This is very promising news. Looks like I've found my project for Summer 2007 :)
