Af40

Hey,

Possibly ignorant, stupid question, but I'm asking it anyway.

Can't we swap out the F35 for a AF40?
I see they are used on LDK's and have been used on LNF's in some applications, and the transmission control module (TCM) is located inside the transmission housing. So with the transmission control module (TCM) is located inside the transmission housing, wouldn't that make things easier to integrate?
How hard would this be to put on a Cobalt SS/TC?

I don't see what it's been done yet, so take it that there's something obvious I'm missing in my complete lack of knowledge of automatic transmissions.

I'm guessing it might be because it still needs info from the ECU, and are ECU wouldn't have anything in there to provide the TCM, and no way to wire the two together?

Though again, I have no clue, trying to figure this all out from knowing nothing.
Gotta start learning somewhere right? Been reading some here and there, but yeah, lot to take in all to once, and seems one application differs from another in how things are done, so gets confusing.

F35 and F40 are both manual transmissions so shouldn't have to deal with a TCM at all. But yes the swap is possible and has been done.

Was thinking, since there are LDK/AF40 setups already, that maybe I could just use the ECU from one of them if that we the case? Though I guess there's all the other sensors, etc in the car then that might not work, or connect to the wiring harness, or even if you got past the wiring, maybe not compatible with the ECU then?
Don't know, could use some input from an exert. Know there are some kicking around here.

Nope, not the F40, the AF40, which goes by many other names, but when it comes to GM stuff, that one seems to be the one most commonly used. AF40-6:

Oh my bad I just assumed that was a typo. Can't help you here sorry. My solution for automatics is to get a manual.

Lol, I think that'd be the suggestion for most, but I've just been through too much BS with mine.
Been messed up by two mechanics, which cost me. Then cost and hassle of clutch replacements, and shift cables needing to be replaced, and cable clamp, and etc, etc; all to drive a standard in traffic. Not really in love with it. I'd rather see if I could get a rebuilt up auto if possible, though know there'd be a cost to it, as a lot of parts would need to be swapped out to make it work, which I'd have to debate once I totaled it all up. Was thinking of using this engine in another project eventually, which I'd use the auto for too, but yeah... Have a few things in mind, and just trying to figure some it all out. Starting here to see if there is some reasonable way to mate this engine to a decent auto. Over the years, after reading post after post, I get the feeling the short answer is no, and long answer is very complex. Just was hoping maybe this trans was overlooked as an option, and maybe was a little more doable? Though, yeah, probably not.
I see others did conversions to auto's for drags, though don't see much info as to how at all.
Hard to find useful info, and being ignorant on the subject, and me just starting out figuring out the auto trans stuff doesn't help.

What about using the ECU from a 2010–2012 Saab 9-5?
They had a AF40 with the LDK, and Bosch ECU, so seems like it should be doable, no?

yeah, that's about how far I figured the thread would go lol.

Not many people into swapping to automatics.
