Clutch noise driving on highway..

What's up guys, I have a clutchmasters Didn'tstage 3, ever since I had it put in while cruising on the highway, let's say I'm in 5thgear 70mph, and I let off the gas it will make a rattle noise I guess you can say,. It's kinda loud, but has gotten a little louder over time.

Now I was thinking its my flywheel, cause I didn't get it resurfaced.
I love the clutch, holds great and engagement is fine. Just the noise that it makes is annoying and sounds like crap, it kinda sounds like if you put a card in bicycle wheel and rode it.

Anyone know what it is? If I got my flywheel resurfaced would get rid of the noise?

Thanks everyone!!

Well I didn't cause to be honest I didn't know about it back then.

I'm actually considering gettin a different clutch an resurfacing my flywheel if it would fix this noise lol ..

not resurfacing your flywheel will only cause clutch chatter when engaging the clutch, or when shifting. it will not cause a noise when cruising.

clutches dont make a card in spokes kinda noise. whatever your noise, it wont be coming from the clutch so you will have to look elsewhere. a card in spokes noise could be an exhaust rattle, something on the engine hitting the body of the car, an axle, even a wheel bearing.

Hmm, I'm almost positive it's something with the clutch makin the noise, it started right after I had it installed.

It's kind of a rattle, but you can tell its from the clutch.. It's very hard to explain.

no, a noise from a clutch is not normal. the exedy may make some noise when engaging or releasing the clutch because its ceramic and a puck design. the gmpp clutch is just an oem clutch for the ss/tc, the ss/tc doesnt have an noises off the showroom floor.

a rattling noise after the clutch was installed is going to be an installation error. either something on the motor is hitting the body/subframe, or a mount is bad. your going to have to get the front of the car up in the air and have a look at everything. being the noise is off throttle, picture the top of the motor rocking forward, the bottom rocking backwards. look at things like the exhaust to firewall clearance, motor mounts twisted, intake piping, and just anything you can see. make sure everything has enough clearance. if everything looks fine, support the engine with a jack and block of wood, loosen the top engine mount and transmission mount, rock the motor back and forth then tighten the bolts up. a mount might be slightly bound transfering a harmonic vibration into the body of the car.

It's only in deceleration. It's happened on every lsj I have seen with an aftermarket clutch

agreed. Exedy do that; noise drove me crazy until I understood what it was, Area47 tipped me off. Never hear it on race cars they are too loud. GMPP updgrade on an LSJ does not make that noise, except maybe a tiny bit....

I know exactly what sound your talking about and I got it after my spec 2+ and spec flywheel was put in. Its pretty annoying especially when your cruising next to a wall on the highway. I wouldn't think its because of you not resurfacing your flywheel but I have just gotten used to it already.

Yeah I got used to it but I think it's gotten louder.. Sharkey, it's nothing hitting the motor or anything. I know that for a fact, you can tell its coming from the bell housing, it's only on decel, when I push the clutch in it goes away. There is no fix for this noise?

does the noise change when you put just a slight bit of pressure on the clutch pedal? if it does, thats the release bearing.

another thing to check would be the small dust cover just above the axle that bolts to the bellhousing. ive seen one lsj that had that pushed in a bit and it would make a card in spokes noise at times.

No, it's only on decel cruising at high speeds, 50mph plus and jus left off the gas and coast. It shas been happening sometimes on accel going uphill , but I think the uphill is from my axel knuckles.

Mine's done that noise on decel since day 1. Brought it up with the dealer and apparently it's just tranny or vibration related noise. I notice it most when I'm coasting, off of the gas, and next to a wall.

I never had any failures or issues due to something relating to the noise, so I took it as just the nature of the beast. Perhaps the tranny gears are cut a bit more straight for strength, but at the disadvantage of being louder.

Yeah, at first they thought it was the turbo heat shield vibrating or something like that. I was like... huh... how does that sound anything like a thin metal piece. lol

They eventually told me they thought it was normal tranny noise. It sounded gear-like to me too, and changed with the speed of the car, so that's what I think too.
