Clutch Slipping?
 

Hey guys..

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure my clutch is slipping. When I'm in either third or fourth gear going around 45-50mph, when I press down on the gas, the car gets loud and hesitates, revs up a bit, drops back down, then begins to accelerate. I googled it and it seems to match what I found. Does this seem about right?

Also, I'm at about 105,000 miles right now. I was planning on going to the dealership on Monday. If this is the case, should I go aftermarket or just stay oem?

sounds like the clutch is slipping. a good test is to accelerate in first gear to around 5000rpm and shift to 4th, if when you step on it the rpm goes up the clutch is slipping, if it bogs the clutch isnt.

with your mods id guess you drive spiritedly, so an aftermarket clutch might be a good option. look into something like a stage 1 from spec. whatever brand you go with, dont go nuts, a stage one will be plenty unless you plan to go forced induction.

I used to drive pretty hard, but not so much anymore with 105k miles. Just fast..lol. It's also 110 degrees outside too so I take it easy.

But yeah I believe it's slipping. I noticed turbo tech has the Exedy stage 1 for $289. I honestly don't need/want anything crazy. I'm done modding my car, so as long as its fixed, I'm happy.

It's definitely slipping.
I had the same exact symptoms.
I just changed my clutch and now it doesn't do it anymore.

Cool, what clutch did you replace it with?

Got a kit from ACT and picked up the LNF slave/throwout from my dealership.
Kit was GM11-HDSS.

that is a horrible thing to do to ur clutch do not do that and do not get on ur car at low rpm idk how many threads there are like this :facepalm:

its not like you go wide open throttle and full power. light throttle you get it up to around 5000rpm, let the clutch out and get on the throttle moderatly. its not going to cause a good clutch to slip, it will however expose a slipping clutch. this is a perfectly acceptable way to diagnose a possible slipping clutch, i do it all the time and no it does not cause any damage. im a certified driveline specialist, this is textbook stuff.

and id like to know whats so bad about stepping on the throttle at low rpm.

I really don't think Ineed to do that test anyway since it's pretty much slipping in every gear. I'm thinking about just buying an Exedy OEM clutch and having someone install it. Amazon has it for $198.99, cheaper than anyone out there. Part # is GMK1010

A local shop quoted me 8 hours of labor to replace the clutch. Does that sound right to anyone?

Normal prices for a clutch install would be $400-$1000, call around to as many reputable places as you can.

i thought u ment like going wot in 1st the shifting hard to 4th and going wot lol i have seen to many of these threads latley hahah

Seems right to me. i did one with a friend in my garage on an F23 and it took us about that long, and we were on the floor.

no you dont rip it from a stop then 1st to 4th. hell, an lsj will slip the stock clutch if you go 1st to 2nd with tire spin in 1st.

A bit high, a tech with knowledge should do it in 4-6 hours.

shop labour for a clutch on a cobalt is 8.1 hours according to all data. shops will quote based on that and depending on many factors may add or remove some labor time. for example, some aftermarket equipment will take more time to deal with. when my shop works on a modded car we wont quote over the phone, we want to look at the car. being a cobalt with bolt ons, the quote you have is typical. and yes most experienced techs can do it in 4-6 hours.
