Jackstand Clutch Changers Thread

Post in here if you've dropped the subframe and transmission with your car on jack stands. How long did it take you? Any advice? etc.

Don't remember how long it took. If its your first time just plan on making a Saturday out of it. If you don't have a new flywheel you'll need to have the stock one turned to that will take some time

riceburner 09-16-2013 11:37 PM

wow only a day you think? ive never done it i dont think i have the wherewithall to do so. chriszz24 youve always seemed pretty mechanically inclined though.

just hit me - tuner sean from chicago claimed to have done a bunch of cobalt clutches in his garage and would generally take the better portion of a day.

SPDDMN36 09-16-2013 11:40 PM

I got half way thru mine and my buddy found a garage that'll let us use a lift :) next weekend ill be able to drive it again, yay!

c1_c1rca 09-17-2013 02:03 AM

i did an engine swap and and tranny swap in my car, both times took about a day, i love doing shit in the drive way, its more entertaining and gives you great experience for shitty situations

jp1600 09-17-2013 03:22 AM

first time was 16 hours for me

1LowLS 09-17-2013 04:00 AM

took me 12 hours and that was waiting an hour for the machine shop to resurface my flywheel.Just used a engine hoist to keep the motor up.wasn't too hard except stabbing the trans back in took quite a few atempts

blueLNFftw 09-17-2013 06:47 AM

My buddy and I have done two, both of our 06 SS/SC's.

Give yourself a whole day and make sure you don't have anything planned the next (thats important). We ran into dumb shit beyond our control on both that cause us to have to pick it back up the next day.

No problems and it should take about 10 hours with bullshit, 2 people, and beers.

JapEatr 09-17-2013 07:54 AM

Ive done about 10 clutches on LSJ this way, 1 on a solstice, and a handful of other cars as well

JapEatr 09-17-2013 07:55 AM

I can do it in 5-6 if i have an extra pair of hands for the stabbing the tranny back in

The bolt behind the starter usually takes 20 mins by itself, 18mm stubby wrench is what i use now

shroogis 09-17-2013 08:02 AM

I've done 4 or 5 this way. It's a piece of cake. I think the first time was 10 hours with 2 guys fumbling through it, I bet I could do it in 5-7 with 2 people now.

Tennpenn83 09-17-2013 09:24 AM

I've done it, several times. Hardest part is getting the tranny lined back up.

InfraRedline 09-17-2013 10:07 AM

I did it on jackstands too...right next to our lift lol just seemed easier on the ground. I took my time and worked on it a couple hours each day since it was winter and I needed something to keep me busy.

bigturbohhr 09-17-2013 10:28 AM

re & re took me like 7 hours, coulda done it 5 if it didnt take me 2 hours to figure out how to slide in the tranny

Gelladuga69 09-17-2013 11:03 AM

It took me like 15 hours, being a complete noob at it. Following the LSJ build book instructions. They were legit tho.

Lol this! It was a bitch, and the trans is so heavy lol.

hate it when that happens

chris88z24 09-17-2013 01:17 PM

When the time comes I was going to buy that engine brace from harbor freight and then use one of those hand wench straps to lift the trans back up to the engine.

LS6Rally 09-17-2013 01:50 PM

As said above, give yourself a whole weekend ust in case, but a Saturday should be enough time, even for your first time. you know your way around a car.

Hell I did an LS a few months ago, who needs an Engine support brace?

I just used the engine puller to hold the motor up while I did it

Attachment 31515

Gelladuga69 09-17-2013 04:09 PM

I also used the 2x4 trick with the straps. I even think there might've been something described like that in the lsj build book.. lol

JapEatr 09-17-2013 04:31 PM

i have trans jack and engine brace

574 09-17-2013 04:53 PM

Motor cycle platform jack on oil pan and man handle the trans

chris88z24 09-17-2013 09:11 PM

Yea I was gonna use the Motorcycle jack on the trans and the brace to hold up the motor.

noorj 09-18-2013 09:51 PM

I've done it twice on jackstands, first time was like 16 hours (while also diagnosing a bad clutch master cylinder which was bullshit!) and second time was about 8 hours
