LSD Questions

Ok guys i am askiing alot of questions because i am redoing my drive train.... if i buy a lsd what else would i need to have to have this installed? How much does something like this cost? Is this a job that i should have done when i replace my clutch?

first off, what model do you have??? im going to asume ss/sc, correct me if im wrong.

you could have this done when you have your clutch replaced. the transmission needs to come right apart and have the new diff set up correctly. you may also need new diff bearings depending on if the old ones get damaged during removal. it does take some time, if it was at my shop id charge 4 hours bench time to properly set it up, this is on top of the clutch labour wich should be around 8 hours.

it may be more worth it to find a used lsd tranny and buy that and have it installed (if you have an ss/sc) then sell your old tranny. it would be more cost effective.

really? thats cheaper? i was gonna buy a new lsd and then just have it installed when i do my clutch

where can i get a lsd tranny?

you can search car-part.com for used transmissions.

a limited slip diff from quaife costs around $950, plus figure 4 hours install at $75/hour brings you to $1250. im sure you can find a used lsd tranny for under $1000, then sell your non lsd tranny and you end up spending very little.

When i did my clutch i was going to install a lsd i had purchased. Turns out you need a special gear puller to get the gears off the main shaft before you can even split the case. NO one had this puller. I checked with my buddy at gm, i checked the saab dealer, and the saturn dealer. i finally went to certified transmission, they qouted me 600 bucks to install the lsd, and thats with the trans already out of the car.

that price is fair we do it for a little less. yes you need service tools and knowledge...here are the parts you need:

M35 TRANMISSION REPAIR PARTS
to do a differential exchange or synchro replacement:
spacer kit this is a collapsible spacer: 55352125 for the main shaft, and two differential case bearings: 12788353, and 5th gear nut 12755195 The reason you need the collapsible spacer is that it is a torque to yield spacer that determines main shaft end float and if you reuse the old one the end float will be too much and the synchro's will clash etc.

The reason you need differential bearings is that you cannot easily remove the old ones from the old diff without damage, to reinstall in the new differential.

The nut should be changed as it is peened to prevent getting loose, and the gasket 90486235 generally gets damaged when you remove the end case


The spacer kit, the main shaft nut and gasket for the end case along with a tube of special anaerobic sealer is needed; The sealer you need to assemble the case back together; the parts run well over $125.00 ( the bearings alone are 60 bucks each)

Also when removing the transmission:

Take the hairpin clip out of the quick disconnect clutch fitting on the bell housing (behind the air inlet and between the ECU and the engine) remove the Q-D and turn it over. You may see (not always)in the female q-d orifice, a little O ring in the socket of the Q-D. Remove it carefully with a small pick and then put the o ring back on the male post for the Q-D which is attached to the bell housing. If the O ring stays in the male Q-D post on removal you have no issues. Be sure it does it can get lost and that means massive fluid leaks and makes a big mess

Then place the q-d back press firmly, reinstall the hair pin clip one clip end in each slot, and bleed the clutch.
