Popping out of 5th gear
A month or so ago my car stopped staying in 5th gear. I don't beat or abuse it, it's my daily driver and I baby it. It currently has 126,XXX miles on it. I brought the car to a trusted friend of mine who owns a transmission shop a couple blocks away from my shop so he could check it out. He said the car needs a 5th gear set GM part #55352402 so when I tried to order it local they told me no dealership in the nation has the part and they can't even get it. Right now the car is sitting until I can find the gear set I need because the last thing I want to do is buy a used transmission or a new gear box from GM. It's under a $300 fix if I can get the part, but at least $1100 for a used transmission and I'm not trying to spend that kind of money. I'm pretty upset that GM can't get me a part for a car that is barely 5 years old. They basically said I'm SOL unless I want to buy a brand new gear box. Just trying to see if anyone else has had any issues like this.
Just to clarify the car is an 07 SS/SC G85

Originally I thought it was the syncro, personally I haven't even looked at it but my transmission guy has over 30 years experience so I'm sure he knows what would be wrong.

It goes into 5th fine and it will stay in for a short amount of time, then pops out. I really don't believe it's the roll pin and I've already inspected the shift cables.

There's no way you need a new 5th gear. If it was a syncro you would be getting grinding going into gear. I would recommend adjusting your shift cables, or it may be the roll pin as listed above.
rarely will you see a car company providing each individual part in a transmission for sale, they typically want you to buy the whole unit.

The transmission is still in the car but the gear set is out, I've been trying to source a gear set for a few days now but no luck, called GM and saab still no luck. I really don't want to buy a used trans just because of a bad gear set.

It's a possibility that you are still within your powertrain warranty, although I see you have some modifications and a dealership may determine that they would void warranty coverage. I can check into the parameters of your warranty, if you're interested. Send me a private message with the last 8 of your VIN and I'll get you the information I have available.

I have a 2007 SS/SC Cobalt, and just this last Friday experienced the exact same problem. With some effort I can hold it in 5th gear. Did you ever replace the 5th gear synchronizer, and did this solve the problem? Also, does anyone know how I find out which transmission I have, and what is this roll pin that people are posting about?

question, do you mongorate have any gears left? My cobalt 2.0 transmission pops out of 5th gear too. Jus started today

The 5th gear synco fork's roll pin, can this be re-used? If not, is it safe to use a generic roll pin from a kit or should I order the exact part number. Hopefully a generic pin can be used as opposed to $12 for a roll pin +shipping and waiting for it.
