So, about those driveshafts!
I have been on this site for a few months now. I have always appriciated the cobalt ss/sc, but never considedered owning one. Well after a lot of researching and reading on here, i decided to use the 0% financing and finially get one. I got it last friday. My wife and i decided to take it 250 miles away to show it off to my car loving family. The next day, we measure out a quarter and start running it with my brothers 2005 GTO and my ss/sc. My bro in law was shifting my car from first to second when he noticed he did not have any power. His rpm's went to the sky but he was not accelerating. He quickly stopped and called me up from the finish line. I joked to my family that it was broken. I got down there, and looked under my right axle and sure enough, my friggin axel was cleanly sheared in TWO!! My bro in law was riding the car fast but was not dumping the clutch or powerstalling or anything. He was opereating the vehicle in normal driving conditions. I sure hope the rest of the car is built better than the drive shaft.

Thing that pisses me off is im used to a LONG first gear and punching it hard. But the ss/sc hits redline so fast and then the energy just DUMPS when you hit redline (thank god i guess) but then goin into second is naturally just plain sluggish till 3000 rpm lol.
Shitty deal about the driveshaft though bro. I havent had any problems, that should be your only problem.

I think they are just too weak...this isn't the first story - I have seen one broken off at the CV joint.
Normal runs off drag strip shouldn't break them - Chev saving money on design I think.

I'm old school
Your story is common. The car has a great deal of wheel hop due to soft engine mounts and suspension components. Wheel hop breaks axels, plain and simple. The Ingalls torque dampner has seemed to be the single easiest solution, people seem to love it. There are also poly engine mounts and suspension bushing available which are also easy enough to install and use.
There are also two places that I know of that are making aftermarket half shafts for the car. Intense Racing and the Drive Shaft Shop. The Drive Shaft Shop is probably a better product, and costs more as well, but they have a great reputation. $1000 for a 400ft/lbs set was the last quote I got.
You should be able to get a GM replacement under warranty for the time being. Just don't tell them you were draggin' the thing.

Thanks for the help guys, i am glad that i am not the only frustrated person on here. C'mon, the ss/sc is a sporty car that should be able to handle fast starts! Kinda sucks that GM's shoddy parts are showing through on such a great car.

Something had to of happended out of the ordinary , or the axles in your car were just freaks . Ive got seriously over 250 dragstrip runs on my 05 without any axle failure . If you dont have slicks and are not launching at a high RPM on those slicks , the only possible way I could see a axle breaking on a stock car with stock tires is out of control wheel hop . Before I put the ingalls brace on , if I didnt contol it , wheel hop could get violent enuff to break an axle .

I snapped an axle the first time I got on the track! Never made it past the 60ft mark. Wheelhop kills the axles. Crazy thing is that I didn't dump the clutch or anything. I rolled of the line at idle, got into the power, wheelhopped, and snap!

And my boyfriend did the same exact thing... this is not uncommon at all it is all i have been reading about lately his front one broke at the track and the rear was about to break. They covered his under warranty and there is no reason for them not too. If one place says no, go somewhere else but hopefullt the new axels last longer then the original.

I had Drive Shaft Shop Axles as one of my planned mods for when I was getting my srt4. I talked to a couple of SRT-4 owners that had the DSS axles. They said they are complete garbage. I belive they sold them for $800 for the srt4. One guy told me that it was better to break the stock axle every now and then because they were like $120 brand new then to buy $800 axles and have them break as well. But then again, these guys were using full out drags and dumping the clutch with there 400+ whp monster srt4's lol.
