Trans axle??

So i let a friend drive my car.... he had a srt4.... two of them....

and when he came to slow down, he would put the car in neutral and let it stop... i said why dont you put it in a lower gear, and help the car slow you down, so the brakes dont do ALL the work... he said fwd cars have transaxles, and its not good for them..

is this true? i cant use the engine to help me brake?

and also, he said EVERY time i want to down shift, i have to rev match, becuase its not good for the transaxle.....

again, is this true?

the only difference between a rwd manual transmission and a fwd trans axle is the fwd transaxle incorperates a differential. they are designed differently, however the principal is the same, gears, syncros, shift sleeves and forks. engine braking is not bad for a transaxle, neither is downshifting without rev matching. rev matching may help extend the life of your clutch, but not by much.
