I have heard that you do need that 100 dollar adapter and that you dont, i dont know if i need it or not. I have heard that if you install a aftermarket player without the adapter that your airbags might go off, but i dont know. I found a simple wiring harness on ebay that costs 18 bucks and it might work. All i need to kno is if i NEED the 100 dollar adapter and what will happen if i dont get it.

i have a friend that works at circuit city as an installer, and he said i didnt need that rediculously expensive harness even though best buy told me i did. so i bought an indash screen for my car and my friend from circuit city put it in without that harness and everything works fine!!! you dont need it trust me!!! btw, i have a 06 SS/SC if that helps at all. someone correct me if im wrong, but i think that harness is for the cars where all the info (temp, mpg, etc) goes through the radio, such as a G6.....

I know that when I put a new head unit in my 05 SC(DVDplayer) I was told I needed to buy the $100 adaptor so my steering wheel buttons for the radio would work....I said **** that and just used the head unit from then on. Was not told anything about the airbag.

Airbags are not affected. The harness is not expensive, but the adapter for steering wheel controls might be $100. Of course, you don't need steering wheel controls for your aftermarket headunit; some people prefer to get rid of them.

The GMOS LAN 04's is the adapter your talking about and its generally not needed in the 05-06's. The 07 and up is a different story but even at that its all a matter of opinion.

The exact part numbers you need are in Emp's sticky at the top of the Electronics section.
The adapter should only run you about $10-20 depending on where you get it from.
BTW- Don't forget about the trim kit and the ant adapter, there not expensive but still needed.

So i got my harness to install a aftermarket stereo in the cobalt.The harness that i got to connect to factory harness is on the left and the harness for the aftermarket stereo is on the right. I got the battery(yellow wire) and the ground(black wire) connected as you see in the picture. But now im stuck and i dont know which is the ignition switch since theres no red wire on the harness to the left. I tried putting the red wire to the blues and the stereo still wouldnt turn on. When purchasing the harness i also got this long red wire, as you see at the bottom of the pic, is that what the problem is? if so where does it go and how?

There is no acc on the factory harness. Connect that red wire coming off your stereo harness to a switched 12v fuse. Use the long red wire to extend the wire coming out of the stereo harness. Did your kit come with a little metal prong?

2 options: buy an "add-a-circuit" (the mini blade fuse style) or I hear they make taps that slide in beside one of the fuse prongs (what 87GPLE was talking about).

Either way you need to get power from one of the fuse connections. Accessed by pulling off the panel next to the passenger's left foot.

If you want your head unit display to dim at night; you are on your own to find a source wire for the illumination/dimmer signal. I tapped the wire that powers the lights to the heater/fan controls

And if you look around you can get PAC wheel control converters for $50. They are a lil confusing to install but I was eventually able to get mine working.

the ss/na has the amplified pioneer stereo in it correct?

easy way to tell is if you have the pioneer marked sail panels with the tweeters in em.

I have an 07 4 door SS with the pioneer system and I was told I needed
the expensive ( here in Canada it's 200) but I have friends who do t have it.
I have everything hooked up but I'm wondering why I can't hear anything from
the speakers. I guess my question is from what I can figure is does the pink
wire which says is for the factory amp, need to be wired somehow for power
or other reasons. Anything would help ...

This describes me exactly, except i don't have the SS model. I have the '06 Cobalt with the premier pioneer system and sub in the trunk. I got the wiring harness and a aftermarket stereo and hooked it all up, it powers on, but nothing comes out of the speakers. I'm thinking this is due to the factory amp that's in there, but not sure.

I'm toying with the idea of just using the RCA's out of the radio to a 4channel amp and run all my mids and highs off of an amp instead of the head unit.

Did you solder your connections? I just did it with that really cheap harness my radio will even stay on unless i open the door

I fixed it, via the FAQ that was posted elsewhere. Turns out with the premium sound system the built in amp has a remote wire that needs to be connected. On my wiring harness the blue wire said "power antenna", and on the stereo harness the blue wire said remote. Connecting these together did the trick!
