Driver Information Center not working

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and the ss/sc world but not cars and trucks, mainly maxed out diesels. I bought a very clean 2006 Cobalt SS 2.0 supercharged for a good price. It had its few issues which I have fixed all of them but the i and reset button on the dash not sterring wheel won't let me scroll through the different options. I pulled the buttons and did some testing and I get 11.8v going to second to last pin for the info button and last pin for the reset button but yet I can't check trip mpg or reset anything. It's been a rough year with a heart attack and major damage to the spine from a infection so I'm on a tight budget until they grant me disability. So I'm hoping you guys have some ideas, I've looked and seen people having the problem but no answers. I hope to put a stage 2 kit on since it already has the zzp header, heat exchanger and injen intake. Any ideas would be much appreciated, I did ground the pcm to the grounding area just because it was the only thing I seen. Glad to be a part of another great looking forum world!

Thanks,
Shane

Welcome to the forum!

The wiring might be fine, but did you check the fuses themselves? I believe that one is on the passenger side fuse panel, not the under engine one.

I did check every fuse under the hood but with a lot of reading trying to get up to speed on these cars I didnt't even realize there was a fuse block in the car. I was told the only one was under the hood I will do a search or look at the manual to find the passenger side one. Thank you

Don't mind the URL, I just took that image from Google and it's a PITA to edit posts on mobile with an image.

Remember it's a Cobalt. The clips aren't all that great so it'll take some finagling to get the panel off.

I went thru every fuse and had power to the back of the information switch and power to an extra pin for each button so could it be something else

The only thing I can think of is checking the connections on the back of the dash. If the lights come on and you're able to dim and brighten the gauges, I would say that. Otherwise (I could be wrong) it's the ECM having issues.

Does the ECM or the BCM control the dash and buttons?

They're basic readings so I wouldn't see why not. This would be something I need to look up to verify.

unplug the dic switch and short terminal 8 to terminal 7 , each time you touch them it should cycle one page forward. if it doesn't then ground terminal 8 somewhere on the car, the metal dash support will work. If it cycles when you short those two terminals you need a switch. if it only works when terminal 8 is shorted to ground then the wire for terminal 7 has a break somewhere or g201 is loose or off. make sure not to spread the terminals otherwise you will have to get another connector.

I willl go out and check it one more time but like I said last night I used a high quality ideal clamp multi-meter to check voltage between the different wires with switch unplugged and when buttons are pushed. I dont get a response either way but with the button plugged in or with them off I even get 11.4v to wire 8 and 9 when I push the button so I know its not the ground or button.

Yea I went to ground with terminal 8. With the button and dash piece out I went to ground and one on 8 and when I would hit the button it would pop up 11.4 volts sending a signal out to the next place if thats the ecm pcm or what I wasn't gonna start digging tonight to see if there was a break in the line going from button to end result dic. I am guessing it is computer based, everything else works perfect on it not a light out anywhere just no ability to search thru the dic. Thanks guys!

on this one its just the ipc sending a signal to the switch and the switch grounds it. the switch doesn't send a signal. The only way to make sure its not wiring or the switch would be backprobe the ipc connector terminal 10 and tap it to ground. if that doesn't work then the ipc is bad.

the pic is from the front so you'll have to make sure your back probing the right wire, looking from the back it would be the second from the left on the bottom, pink wire.

I finally took the cluster out and the part number is gm 15792680 which correct me if I'm wrong thats a 2007 cluster which everything I've read tells me it will stop the dic from working in a 2006 because they changed all that around. I think its mostly in the radio not sure about that one but let me know if there is any way to make this one work and if not what part number I need for mine that has the red lines for mph and goes from 0-160. Thanks all the wiring diagrams really helped I did exactly as instructed #10 tap to ground.
