retrofits
I want retrofit headlights. don't have a clue where to get em. is there a site I can buy already built ones? is hidwerks any good? if not, I will attempt to make my own, looks easy enough. what exactly do I need from retrofit source? thanks for the help
|
Haven't you been on here like 6 years?
There is an official retrofit thread on here And a thread almost everyday on retrofits. Retrofit source should have a complete diy kit Or contact mike at hidwerks plenty of satisfied customers around here never heard of anything going wrong....loljk Or talk to riceburner or basswaves |
Tom all the stuff up do on your car you should make your own. I think you would have few issues.
Can make em a bit custom then as well. |
Yeah contact bass_waves he should help you out
|
ya id actually like to do em myself. id get some spare lights from a wrecker. but what kit should I get from retrofit source? there are so many kits, no idea where to begin.
iv looked for the stuff on the site. found some old stuff, wanted up to date info. and u all know how hard it is to find stuff on the site with search lol. |
The easiest retrofit is the mini H1. For still simple and better output, go with the D2S. For even better light out put, but more modification go with the FX-R (bulbs do make a difference), the EVOX-R projectors are nice as well if you do a lot of highway driving, again similar modification as the FX-R. But for the ultimate light performance go with the Lexus LS460-R with either the nightbreaker bulbs or the CBI
|
Thanks that's what I wanted. I'll have more questions about the options later
|
The next question is how much are you looking to spend on the retrofit? Because the price ranges from 300 to over 1000

You want the 9007 harness
Go with the 200 dollar oem ballasts youll thank us later when you dont have crappy 100 dollar ballasts going out Remove all sealnt from the oem housings and replace neatly with the otc butyl glue Id go with d2s thats my.plan next run Bixenon bulbs and harness means you have hibeams and lowbeams Ive had good luck with all bulbs so far Youll need an oven and a remel with various attachments Heat the headlights up at 220ish degrees for ten minutes each or so, take one out, work at prying the tabs off so you can remove the lense, you might need to put each back in the oven a few times to get them off without breaking stuff haha More oven time may be needed to work all the sealant out, or a hairdryer helpshere, prepare to lose a good layer of fonger skin doing this, an old flathead screwdriver helps here Then youre gonna want to remove the oem bulb shield deals and dremel the 3/4" deep ring off the back of the drl housing, you also may need to widen the bulb bore a tad, remove the 3 prong things in there To paint the projector shrouds it helps to get oven cleaner (the stuff with a certain chemical i forget what its called atm but youll see some that say they DO NOT CONTAIN it so find one that does; you soak them in this for a while and the chrome finish wipes right off making painting so much better. After that its pretty much plug and chug, test fit the projectors, test them in your car, make adjustments, lay in new sealant, press the lenses on a bit, bake for a bit, press them on all the way and done |
Md2s 3.0 is close to performance as the fxr 3.0. It's a slight diff in performance but a huge diff in mounting.
If you don't want to break the bank OP. I have budget build DIY retrofit kits. Lmk if u want 1. Has everything you need to make a retro out of cobalt lights. |
Good info saving for later

If you're going with the mini H1, mini d2s, or the fx-r get the kit just upgrade to OEM bulbs, TRS's new ballasts are good so far. High end rprojectors generally aren't in a kit.

Subd for later.

They finally designed it so you can change between AMP and D2S connections without having to use the garbage converters. Haven't really tested the performance difference yet, might have to snag my friends camera and do a comparison |

Why did you tell me that...I just bought a new set of injectors and the rail...

Haven't really tested the performance difference yet, might have to snag my friends camera and do a comparison I also have a customer running them. I would assume performance must be better as the SS and DSP were not that great. Either ways I can't do much testing as I myself don't run em. As for d2s set ups. Md2s 3.0 is pretty dead on with performance atm. I have a set and the output is unbelievable with Philips 88XXX the 100$ bulbs with dsp 35w. If I have shaved the nub. More color band but didn't want to lose warranty just in case. I should of though. |
anyone ever try a LED convertion kit? how do those compare to hids?
|
Hey bass what the best bulbs i can get for my set up? I want to get a spare set just in case

Heat it up.
Yeah I knew that, but I know silicone is different than the glue used, didn't meow if it needed a different temp or time |

Morimoto XB line up is crazy good right now. DO NOT GO 55W ON A MINI H1. 35w xb is perfect on a mini h1. If you truly want performance. D2s set ups. I'm about to build some d2s set ups to dumb on market so keep an eye out.
