Wierd Speaker noise

I installed an aftermarket h/u a couple months ago. recently i have been hearing a loud high-pitch squeel and some static coming from my rear left (driver side) speaker. it comes and goes randomly. when it does make noise, i notice that as i accelerate, the high pitch noise goes higher. anyone have a clue?

btw: i have not touched any speaker wires or anything like that, just changed the deck. i have the cheaper harness as i do not need onstar / door chime

do you have subs (not the stock one)?

brickloaf Aug 24, 2010 10:38 PM

your going to want to look in to a Ground Loop Isloator...the noise your hearing is engine noise getting picked up by your RCA cables...if possible try to keep your RCA cables as far as possible from any 12v power wire....i had this same problem with my old head unit and i had 2 ground loop isloators and it still made that noise but as soon as i switched to my new head unit the noise is 95% gone

as far as the RCA's, i don't believe i used any. just the standard 16 or 18ga. wires from the new H/U harness to the Metra harness. so all of the wires go from the head unit to the factory amp.

And why would only the left rear speaker make noise? if it was a ground / RCA issue, wouldn't it affect more than 1 speaker?

damn sorry i misread your question....

it must be your new HU then....where is it grounded too? i know that a bad ground is another thing that might cause it. wherever its grounded take a flathead and scrape away the paint where the wire touches the metal so it has a solid connection.

and as for the left speaker only making noise...i have no idea

kevinj4891 Aug 26, 2010 12:33 PM

i'll check the ground just in case this weekend.

i haven't done/changed anything past the head unit, so i don't know how one speaker in the back is being affected (rare, but could be a defective speaker)

i had an old maxima with preamps... i dont know if the cobalt system does too... but i know when my preamps were going they made that noise too... till they exploded... lol... extreme case i came to find out... but IF the cobalt has the same thing you may wanna look into that... stress on the IF... i might be wrong... i usually am lol

same thing happened to me. it was the ground cable coming from the amp

i'm using the stock amp...haven't changed a thing. can't be the amp

again. i installed an aftermarket h/u only. running stock amp, stock speakers, stock wiring harness (to metra adapter for the radio)

ShadowStal3er Sep 7, 2010 05:23 PM

make sure your wire harness has good connections on EVERY wire... only thing i can think of at this point

kevinj4891 Sep 7, 2010 11:02 PM

gonna take it all out this weekend and inspect. it's weird cause it's only the left rear and it comes and goes, seems like when i hit bumps it will come/go. I'll turn off my radio and it will go away, when i turn it back on, it takes a minute to hear again.

again. if im still and it's on, i can rev the engine and the high pitch noise goes with the throttle

weird, no word from Emporer. That guy is everywhere and has helped me/everyone before

My stereo sounded awesome then I put in lightup pedals and the converter caused my speakers to squeal, do you have anything with a small converter box in the car possible, lighting, etc?

nothing else added. only H/U

i think it may be the wires in the back. I head the noise, opened my glove box and moved my ipod wire around, i think it moved around the harness a bit and the noise disappeared. will take out my radio, etc this weekend and check connections

EmperorJJ1 Sep 12, 2010 04:21 AM

ur ground is probably loose or something and its only getting ground via the antenna. the stock antenna wire runs of the right side of the car

kevinj4891 Sep 13, 2010 12:24 PM

i took it out this weekend, double checked the crimps, etc. nothing looked out of place. i'll double check the ground later today. i have NOT heard the noise today on my way to work, or last night, so i'm wondering if i accidentally fixed it.... maybe i moved the wires a bit and took care of the problem. will keep you updated.

my only issue now is the dam antenna or something is rattling around. i'll have to drive it over some more bumps to get everything to settle again and make it quiet

kevinj4891 Sep 17, 2010 12:24 PM

i think i fixed the rear speaker noise, but now i have an annoying rattle. have to open it up again.

i think the antenna adapter is rattling around, causing the noise. i think what happened is that it got wedged between the metal frame before and was grounding / shorting a little to cause the speaker noise. so now i'm having to go back and tape down the antenna so it doesn't rattle or cause the speaker noise.
