yes, when I spoke to a gm rep earlier today i was informed that the specific "batches" of power steering motors were the reason they were recalled. I don't understand why, since over a three year period cobalts and ions were built hand in hand by gm, that the batches weren't included on the ion side. I find that hard to believe, or better yet maybe they knew? oh wait, no because everyone on RLF has had a power steering problem at some point rofl...

I haven't had this problem and I have owned a Cobalt (2006 SS 2.4L Coupe) for 21,250 miles, and a 2009 SS/T for 12,000 miles and I have never had 1 problem with the power steering.....

I own a 2005, have had this issue for closing in on 2 years now, it's a lot scarier to drive that gm makes it out to be, 65 on a tight freeway turn is no joke without power steering.

Technically you do still have power steering, the pump is just not working. If you've ever driven a car entirely without power steering, it's not bad. My friend took it out of his CRX when he did the engine swap. He drives it everyday. But when you HAVE power steering and the pump goes, it's about 20x harder than not having it at all because you need to bypass the pump..

there is no pump.. its electric power steering
Does anyone know how labor intesive this is... i don't need them tearing my car apart for something that hasn;t failed yet.

shouldnt be labour intensive at all, the motor is located below the dash on driver side, u can see it, it sits above pedals, looks like a black cylinder. its only 2 bolts.....and a harness that it connects to. Its very simple, and is not complicated AT ALL

Its about time, mine went out at 36k and Ive been trying to get GM off there @$$ and get the recall going, Our sister store has been doing the same. (the company I work for sells GM and Ford and I sell Fords) It goes to show you that Toyota grew way to fast and is now paying for there mistakes. I knew that when the carrola was under investigation for the same problem it would get GM to do the same considerin JTECT(a division of Toyota) is the company that makes parts for both car manufactures. Just an FYI things are just beginning for Toyota it will get worse, and thats not going to be good. it will for me

Before I bought (actually, paid for) mine, I checked the recall - and my vin wasn't on the list...
(please don't ask for a link, I think I found it here, but cannot be sure)
I'll presume mine's ok, and frankly I'm confident that GM will come through this...
This is a great little car, and I've not been soured one iota.

so from what i understand the power steering is built into our steering columns and is one unit.....does that mean they are going to replace the entire steering column?

if I've understood correctly, it's an electric module connected to the column, and wired to the rack.
imho, in light of recent auto manufacturer disclosures, GM is playing the high road by making this an official recall while only one person has been hurt.
considering just how many of these cars are out there, and how few incidents have been recorded, I wouldn't loose any sleep over this if I were you.
I would say that if you have not had any issues, bring it up the next time your booking your car in for service work... but again, that's opinion.

They will probably just replace the motor itself, but with what yet I don't know. Perhaps they determined the problem and have built replacement units.

SO i had to fix this over a year ago on my 05 for about $750...
Very happy to see this. Exact same problem. What I dont understand is why the HHR isn't on the list.
