fuel smell coming from car

so for the past couple of months i have been smelling a hint of gasoline after any drive, i have gotten underneath the vehicle, looked under the hood, filling cap, and by the gas tank to try and find where the smell is coming from but i have had no luck. i think this is killing my gas mileage because after short drives my gas level drops quite a bit. Im just wondering if any one else is having this issue as well and where else i can check so i can find this smell.
Thanks in advance:cssNET:

your first suspicion of a leak is probably right. I don't know of the name of the product, but I think they sell fuel leak detector kits which is basically a dye that will glow under a florescent light in the presence of fuel. Be careful of fuel leaks as they can be dangerous. Take it to a shop if need be.

does your call fall in the recall for the fuel hose that cracks and is covered under warranty. the dealership replaces the whole fuel pump free of charge. 06-08 cobalts and hhr i believe. also a power steering recall for those same years. maybe check into that if you havent had it done and havent solved the fuel smell. im sure you have by now i realize this post is 4 months old.

As long as he has an 07-up, it doesnt matter if its affected or not. I just got off the phone w/ my service advisor and apparently my car does NOT fall within the VIN range for the recall. My car has been whining (not from the front  ), but from the rear for about 10-12K miles i'd say. I dont notice it anymore, used to it now. However, the powertrain warranty covers the fuel pump regardless. I thought it was considered a wearable item and not covered, but she informed me i was wrong. So in it goes tomorrow and gets a nice fresh new fuel pump.
