2006 Cobalt SS - no shift indicator light

Greetings!

I am taking my barely-week-old baby to the dealership tomorrow. I have been driving it for almost a week and noticed that the shift indicator light NEVER comes on. My hubby bought a Cobalt LX just over a month ago that is also a manual transmission. I am familiar with the gauges and thought this to be a bit odd.

I called the dealership and was told to "run up the rpms to about 4500 to 5000 and see if it comes on" so I tried this once - no light.

I also feel a bit of a vibration and lift through the shifter handle after shifting the car into third gear. When I hit the gas I feel the shifter handle lift up a bit and vibrate - which I think may be due to a loose motor mount.

Dumb question but figured I would ask anyway: there SHOULD be a shift indicator light on cars with the manual transmission, correct?

Anyone else experienced issues with the vibration and lifting I described concerning the shifter itself?

I'm figuring it to be something relatively minor since the car has been sitting on the lot and basically the only miles were test drive miles....of course, that's what the warranty is for.

Everyone have a great day and thank you for providing a forum SS owners.

The shift light is not active in the SS. Also, the vibration/movement you feel from the shifter sounds normal. Mine does the same thing as well as most of the other manuals I've driven. You should be fine.

If the you own a '06 SS/SC, it doesn't have a shift light. I have one

Thank you for the reply. See what I get for calling the dealership? Geez. So even though you can see the outline on the gauge cluster it is not active. And the vibrating/lifting is normal. Cool beans. Thank you so much! I let hubby (a mechanic/master fabricator) drive it today just to give me peace of mind and ensure it was not my imagination.

Maybe thats why your not her hubby

I've heard of sporadic shift light sightings on cars tuned with HPTuners. Too bad I can't replicate it because I'd really like to have it show up as well.

After driving my buddy's SS/SC I wish there was a shift-light at redline. My S2000 has one that flashes at the rev limit which is handy if you've never driven the car before. I hit the rev-limiter pretty hard b/c the motor feels like it has so much left to give, and the computer turns off the fun.

But the old-school GM shift light that is on most of their cars is junk because it comes on whenever it thinks you should shift, which I suppose was for fuel economy but just really annoying b/c nobody ever pays attention to it.

years ago, i had an 87 Escort Pony with a 1.9L 2bbl with the wide ratio 4speed... (if this thing had the engine to pull it, this transmission was geared to go 600mph  ) and in 4th gear, the shift light would come on... it would come in reverse. It would come on at an idle... it drove me nuts!!!

The 05 base cobalt i had had the shift up light... i barely noticed it.
