Best cheap way to read airbag codes

I don't have a tech 2 available to me to use, was wondering if there are any cheap scanners or home brew ways to view the codes. I can sodder etc. Replaced the driver bag, Front sensor, clockspring, both belts, and I put in a used sdm from a uncrashed car, all part numbers appeared to be the same but I get 1 flash then a steady airbag ligHt and the dash says to service airbag. Fuses are good too. Guessing the sdm might be vin coded to the other cars computer?

yes the sdm need to be vin coded to the bcm. scanning the srs is not something the average code reader can do, you need to do it with an actual scan tool. you wont need a tech 2, any good scan tool (snap on, otc) or laptop based scanning software (auto enginuity) can scan it. i myself have the auto enginuity software and i was able to "marry" the new (used) sdm to the bcm on an 06 hhr i had in my shop.

Honestly your cheapest option is to take it to the dealer and request the sdm be programmed and setup. For instance at my work it would be 109 to program and set it up. Unless you know someone with a higher quality a/f scan tool. There is no way to set it up without a scan tool. Like the other guy said, your average affordable scan tool doesn't do airbags.

Yup they are both right so pay a few bucks at the dealer, or buy a new scan tool. The only cheap option would be to have a friend or someone that owns the quality scanner help you out if you don't have any then dealers is your only option
