Cobalt already has $750 REBATE!!!!!! WHY?
Discuss. This is SICK. They can't even try to sell 1 car before they start offering these rebates! I must admit it will help me sell more of them because I work at a Chevy store.
I wonder if this can be combined with all of us that pre-ordered with the free xm and free sunroof. I don't think that program worked really well because I don't know of many people who did it. I was the only one at my dealership who took advantage.

Are you in the States or Canada? Either way, that's weird that GM would introduce rebates right away on the Cobalt... they waited for till later in the year for all the new '04s last year (malibu, colorado, daewoo cars). I just hope that the resale value stays a little better then most GM vehicles, but with rebates and probable fleet sales to rental companies... with the exception of possibly the SS S/C that probably won't happen.

Big Discounts on Cobalt
I have a GM Card with $1400 in credit toward a GM car. I went to the GM website last week and it said you could use a max of $1000 towards a Cobalt. I started thinking abount an SS. Yesterday I got a card in the mail saying that GM had a new bonus program that would raise my GM credits to $2000 with another $500 on select models. The Cobalt is listed as one of the select models and the $2500 can be combined with the $750 rebate.
All this stuff expires on 1-3-05 so the trick is whether there will be enough ss coupes at the dealers by then. If not I am going to buy a Scion TC.

I got the same thing in the mail yesterday. My Cobalt is already on order I hope it shows up before this deal expires, it will save me a bundle. My $23,000 car will become a $19,000 car with all of my savings. Jeff

the fine print on my card says the car must be delivered from dealer stock. you may need to start working on your dealer to "cancel" your order and have your car placed in dealer stock for a day - he shouldn't care since he gets the full amount reimbursed from GM.
I get another $500 off because I am military. My target price is $17,500 - about the same as the scion tc. I don't want any options (unless I can find one with the free sunroof and xm radio) and I am not picky about color, so I think I have a shot.

I think dealer stock just means the dealer has it in stock at the time of the offer. I went through the same thing when I bought my last Cavalier and I had no problem getting the discount. If they give me any trouble I will do what you suggested just cancel my order the day my car comes in and then buy it again. Jeff

Well if you look at it this way, $750 is not that much money compared to the average $3500 rebate. GM needs to get this car out of the gates with a bang, and by giving customers $750 in their pockets, they can further add to their Cobalts (Ex: The Price of a Sunroof on a Cobalt is $725 or $750 I believe). Sounds like a plan to me, plus with my $5,000 GM Card Earnings, my SSS will come in no time.

Wow someone has their panties in a bunch. You need to take a step back and realize that this is the way GM prices their cars. Incentives are what seal the deal for many people. Nevermind the fact that the price of the car may have been inflated somewhat initially to counteract the money saved in incentives.
From another point of view, you should realize what this incentive is. GM is offering a good interest rate (0% for 3 years, 3.9% for 5 years, etc) OR $750 cash. The $750 is not a rebate perse, it is an amount you can choose to receive if you decline the financing offer.
Now, depending on how the car sells against GM's expected numbers, the numbers we will probably never hear about, then we can expect to see bonus cash offers on the cars. Sometimes bonus cash is offered only on a certain style or trim level (ie. sedan only, or non-SS only). It will depend on what areas need a boost in sales. This doesn't mean that they are cheaping out, only that they have a goal - which ultimately drives production, and rather then slow down the line, which takes time, they will offer more incentives to move more cars. If you've taken basic economics, then you know why this might make sense - sell 5000 cars at $5000 profit and you've made $25,000,000. Sell 10000 cars at $4000 profit and you've made $15,000,000 more profit.

Dave Angry?
Dave's not angry he's just armed with a calculator, business sense, and the willingness to explain GM's thought process.
On another note, one of my local chevy dealers is in the process of being bought out, they've said that the new dealership should be getting their next shipment of cars around the beginning of next month, since it will be a new dealership do you think I should wait to see if they will be offering better incentives to sell more cars and build their reputation in the city?

And I will also be in line for the $1000 graduation scholarship. That should be nice, as I can use the savings to shorten my financing period (if I don't lease) and pay less or zero interest.
