Considering purchase of an SS Supercharged
Sorry in advance for asking questions that have probably already been asked but I was hoping I could get some answers from actual Cobalt SS owners since the answers are hard to be found elsewhere. Here it goes:
A couple weeks ago I test drove a 2006 Cobalt SS-Supercharged with 60,000 miles on it. I loved the car, it was pretty quick, quite comfortable and felt solid. The asking price was $14,000 firm. My questions are: 1. Is this a decent price? 2. How reliable are these cars if you are religious about doing maintenance and only drive it somewhat hard every once in a while (shifting near redline maybe every couple weeks out of boredom)? 3. How are these as winter cars? Will I absolutely need snow tires? 4. Are parts expensive (I understand its relative, maybe this is a dumb question)? 5. How annoying does the huge spoiler get over time? I'm currently driving a Pontiac Vibe GT (1st gen), I'm quite tired of not having a whole lot of torque and the shape making crosswinds extremely annoying. Any input? |
Anybody?

i think the price could be a little lower.. Part prices i think aren't to bad priced for these little boogers.

yeah that price seems way high for 60,000 miles.

How annoying does the huge spoiler get over time? 2. Very few people have problems with their stock cars. 3. Car is fine in the winter, take it easy and for sure get snow tires as the stock ones are not great. 4. Compared to other vehicles aftermarket parts are moderately expensive but not anything over the top, OEM parts are ridiculously expensive as always. 5. It will seemingly intrude your rear vision at first, but you get used to it.. if it's that bad you can switch trunks with someone or just rip it off and fill in the holes. |
It's a very nice car. But it does have it's flaws like all cars. Various rattles, squeaks and knocks. Just a GM economy/sports car . Very bang for the buck though if you ask me. They respond very well to modifications. It's really picky with how you drive it (the clutch is anyway). That's not a bad asking price. The resale value on these cars aren't that good. But NADA and KBB value a good condition SS/SC to be in the high 14K range. I personally give it a 4/5 Stars, and not being biased :)

Any input? 1) thats a bad price i got mine with 4k miles and 07 for 16,500 2) I have had no probs with it (cept a burnt clutch but that was me and the previous drivers fault) 3) Dont know i live in cali 4) I would say no, not bad even performance parts arent that bad 5) I have low rise, but u can switch the spoiler or take it off |

Thanks these replies are helpful. The general consensus seems to be that they are asking too much. It is for sale at a dealership so the NADA and KBB I looked up were for retail. Looks to be in good condition and is very easy to drive. How can I tell if it has LSD? Prices on cars like this usually don't tend to be too flexible because they are not common, but what would be a fair offer? $13,000? I'm thinking about waiting until spring if they still have it so I don't have to buy snow tires immediately.

The original sticker or ask the guy

I remember the seats being leather and quite comfortable but I don't know that they were Recaro seats. It literally is the only used one in the area. Closest new one is 100 miles away (state capital). I guess the smartest thing to do would be to wait until I have more established credit and try to make them a lower offer if they still have it/wait for another one to come around. I do want the car, looking forward to being an active member in the forum. Thanks.

a bit high for the price... get him down to like 12-11 maybe less (check KBB.com)
the high rise wing isnt that big of a deal, car is reliable (its my DD 35miles to work each day), stock parts are reasonable priced. Most shit that brakes on these cars are because the driver, yet I havent had anything brake, or any real issues for that. |
i bought my 05 for 10k with under 40,000 i think 14k is abit high. but a power wise, the cars abit under rated and its quick out of the box. only thing i dont like about the car is inconsistency of the clutch and i feel like i have to fight to steer the car, what ever groove you hit that the way it goes 4stars

To check for the LSD being there, go into the trunk... Lift the left corner of the carpet (closest to the trunk lid), there will be a silver sticker underneath stuck to the body of the car. Look for "G85" in the list of codes. If it's there, the car has an LSD.
