Driver's side door won't open

I leave the house ready for work today and I went to open my car door and it wouldn't open. I had to get in on the passenger side. I was able to open the door from the inside using the handle ONCE. Closed it. Now neither the outside or inside handle will open the door. The handles feel as if they're not even pulling on anything. Is this a common problem? And how the heck do I get it fixed?

pop off interior of door, check to see if the rods are still attached to lock actuator

Oh, I also forgot to say that the lock will go up and down if I push the lock/unlock buttons.
