Hood Louvers- ideas, placement, existing setups ect
Hello guys, I have been researching on this topic and cooling mods for our cars. If this has been discussed direct me to the info.
I plan on adding a center hood louver to my 09tc. Placement will be directly behind latch seal weather stripping under hood. (I'll post pic soon) once installed i plan on measuring temps and providing the data here.
Now i have seen where John Powell placed his louvers on sides, I would consider those too but in a more inward spot as i have a typhoon intake.
Objectively, I want cooling in summer desert heat and all the benefits for having a louvered hood. With my hood open and rad fans running i could feel the hot air moving straight up and over the intake manifold (obviously) so with a blower in the front again same air exiting effect. This is why i am choosing the placement of a center louver. I believe it will be more effective in pulling air through the rad and intercooler. Also there are no electrical parts in this immediate area. (alternator, fusebox ect)
I had the world challenge louvered hood on my c6z and it worked incredibly well at high speed, reduced lift and engine temps cooled rapidly after spirited driving.
Finally, I am asking for input and pictures if you have added louvers to see how, what and how well it's worked for you.
a company that makes louver kits has a set for an m3 that i may look into for the center louver.
If we get a good discussion going with detailed info I am also considering designing my own and if they work effectively i may just make and sell them for our little market.
SnailSS i am sure will chime in as he was interested in this too, maybe we'll work on this project together. Anyhow lets go!
M3 center louver considering, but very expensive i think for a peice of aluminum.
My intended placement
Powells side louvers sc car.
Examples of center louver placement.

Off the top of my head, @colodude18 would be the guy to contact. He has the side louvres, and does custom Cobalt work. Haven't seen much of him over the last year though.

Follow the web address to this hood. Looks the most oem and not a bit ricey. Location of air exiting is spot on.

Found some inexpensive louvers that would possibly fit perfectly in my predetermined location.

me too, i may settle for those. What do you think of the placement? 2 triangles that sit above intake manifold. It seems like the perfect spot to pull air from radiator.
i wish John would chime in. I bet he would have some real world experience to bring up regarding the fluid dynamics of our chasis

world challenge Corvette hood. I only had to buy an alternator cover. Hand washed all the time, actually got caught in a flash flood for 17 miles, over transmountain drive (snailss will know the insanity) steam pouring out vents from headers.. long story short i had no engine problems. May have been lucky but i think we are safe.

Hey guys, has anyone seen the 2020 camaro ss hood extractor vent up close? I wonder if it is possible to buy one from gmparts store and install on our hood.

Looks like it would fit and look oem on the cobalt hood. Input gents?

The ats one is huge on our hood but yeah definitely move air. Only thing is losing rigidity in the front of the hood where the cut would be made. Unless the vent itself is reinforced.
again, just exploring ideas for next springs project.
