this is exactly why you should buy it yet.

blazinbaltss 06-23-2008 10:11 AM

well is it hard for someone who has never tuned a car to do

originaladrian 06-23-2008 10:12 AM

i predict more blown motors

LamboW9 06-23-2008 10:16 AM

powerz 06-23-2008 10:18 AM

I hate to be a downer but this is true. It's not for the average person modding their car.

LamboW9 06-23-2008 11:05 AM

yea..yanno if you can find a person that will help you then sure get it and go at it....just make sure its someone that knows what they're doing or BOOM and your out the cost of a new engine...plus i hear the ecotecs are a lil tricky to tune

Doc 06-23-2008 11:28 AM

The ecotec is just like any other motor...fuel, spark, air.

agreed, I have found it a little easier to tune then my LS1 with spray actually. However I suck at tuning both and always have a friend by my side who actually knows what he's doing. lol

Yes it is hard if you have never tuned. It's like learning the guitar. You're not going to be good at it at first, but you can still make noise.

The tollerances are a lot more sensitive than the older GM motors though. But yeah cars run off of ignition, oxygen, and gasoline. Almost every table relates to those in some way.

You laugh, but remember all of those SRT-4s that were running piggyback tuning through the Gameboy Advanced? They really were tuned through a Nintendo. And you forgot the SELECT before start. Looks like you need to practice your tuning some more! :-P

Select is only if you have a wife or gf in the car.... and he isnt ready for that yet

I know I shouldn't be encouraging the newb... but he has to learn from somewhere.

First, get familiar with the EFI system....

HERE is a good read of how a basic EFI systems works, compared to a carb.
I highly suggest picking up two books, a copy of Maximum Boost and Supercahrged by Corky Bell.

Then read the following;

HP TUNERS FAQ SECTION

HP TUNERS 4 CYL SECTION

Then get a copy of the software and start reading the help files, and getting familiar with the tables.

Then, read though CPIG's tuning guide... found HERE.

From there, read more in depth into the tuning specifics here, and on the HPT forum.

When your ready, get into a stock vehicle and tune it a bit. It's a good place to start, and you can always flash the stock tune back.
When your cool with that, you can slowly step up to bigger things.
