Need information on A Arms

So after attempting to move the SS after putting in the new strut the brand new CV Axle I put in failed an I mean FAILED. It ripped apart with a loud bang blew through the cv boot. I was going 30km just switching into 3rd. Soo I'm going to replace the Lower Arms (FE5) bought two brand new ones for left an right. The reason why I'm replacing the A Arms is because I think the one that blew the CV Axle is out enough to compromise the integrity of the part. Or it was defective. So can somebody show with pictures how to properly remove the A Arms.

P:S if this doesn't work its a new engine cradle to fix the alignment.

P:P:S the Passenger Wheel is back half an inch

Have you looked to see if your car has been in any accidents?

WillisW 04-23-2017 12:24 AM

It went through a ditch must have hit a rock or something solid

zeeky420 04-23-2017 08:23 AM

You should also check your shocks top plates everything

Struts have been replaced including the springs next time I'm around the vehicle I will take pictures of everything to do with the tire being out

Depending on how hard they got the ditch they could of moved a strut tower.

Realistically the lower control arm is bent. A new arm with new bushings and ball joints should fix it.

That's what I'm thinking I looked at the a arm an it looks bent. I can't believed I missed it on the look around I guess I was more focused at looking at the strut then anything. Do you know anything on how to remove the A ARM?. I'm also replacing the broken CV an the sway bar linkage on both sides

They aren't hard to do as long as the rear bolt going through the carriage isn't froze up. There should be a "how to" in the suspension section for reference.

I was working outside it was a nice day out so why not. But that's what I found when I took the wheel off cv axle is definitely done ripped apart an bearings are thrown every where only found 2 of them. The pulley attached to the crank got hit by the cv. Doesn't look like real damage engine still sounds good. An there's no knock or anything so I got really lucky there. An yes the sway bar linkage is removed I got new ones ordered as well. I need help now because when trying to remove the bolt holding the a arm to the carriage the nut that is welded into the carriage broke free so what do I have to do now to get it free an out

You're going to have to drop the cradle: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/susp...shings-301627/

Ha says not to heat it which is exactly what I did an yes it did cook the bushings an yes there was a tiny fire. So drop the cradle but not the engine an just let it hang on the top mounts??

exninja 04-25-2017 01:04 PM

Yeah, you should be fine to do that. He doesn't mention the radiator but you'll need to tie that off when you drop the cradle.

I will make sure to tie it off then .The bushing is seized to the bolt so that makes it a pain. All the other bolts came out nice an easy so that's good. I'm just going to try something on that bushing an see if it works.

I was able to tear out the rubber of the old bushing and hold the center metal sleeve with vise grips. Just keep a lot of PB plaster soaking on it.

What kind of vice grips did you use?? I was thinking of using a pipe wrench instead of vice grips

Both new a arms are in. An so was the new cv axle but here is where it gets interesting. The cv axle failed as soon as torque was applied to it. Which I mean trying to move in first gear it failed cv boot ripped an you can see the knuckle now as well I need ideas on what it can be.

royce777 05-09-2017 10:35 AM

Interesting. You certain it was the correct axle? Check you don't have a bent strut. Check for damage to the knuckle. Is the wheel still not centered in the wheel well?

I replaced the strut before cause I thought that's what was wrong but it wasn't. I asked the seller if it was an they said yes it's the correct one. I'm going to be checking the knuckle today. I'm getting tired of pulling the same wheel off day after day. What is your measure for your wheel to center? So I can compare the two
