shifting/driving question

hey quick question - i've been trying to get better mileage out of the ss/sc and I was wondering how bad it is to be driving around in fourth/fifth, only doing about 40 mph...rpms are around 1900...is that bad for the tranny? and i'm not flooring it obviously, i'm just kinda coasting around....just curious if its bad or not, also what kind of mpg is everyone getting right now?

SSdan 06-11-2008 11:25 PM

Not bad at all man. I let my RPM down to about 15-1600 before i downshift to a lower gear if I have to.

anotherSSSCinPA 06-11-2008 11:27 PM

I do the same thing on my ss/sc. I average about 22mpg driving it grannystyle but I am usually stop and go on my morning/afternoon commutes to work. Hoping my Injen CAI comes in this week from TTR and that'll help a tiny bit more.

greekss 06-11-2008 11:35 PM

yea i'm gettin about 26 right now...which is nice

06vrss 06-11-2008 11:39 PM

dude i cruise around all the time in the low rpm range, i get about 23 mpg

Just to let you know....if you lug the engine, it's possible to get just as bad gas mileage as being in a lower (numerical) gear at a higher RPM.......It can put way more load on the injectors.

2.4L with the vector tune. 26 city bitches! I drive like a crazy person too.

schamsy 06-12-2008 10:11 AM

07 SS/SC S2 CAI an I'm getting 26-27 mixed city highway. I race everything with wheels, bycycles included.:twothumbs

an0malous 06-12-2008 10:21 AM

your likely lugging it, and having to give it more gas than is necessary, as the car would be much happier up over 2000

just my thoughts.

I get 36mpg mixed. 45 open highway.

He has a point, I usually use 4th for anything under 40, 3rd under 30, and 2nd under 20. Over 40, 5th all the way for me.

Your not going to save enough fuel by doing that to make it worth it driving around town.
If you have to accelerate for some reason your just going to bog ,I prefer to keep it at 2 grand or above.

SSdan 06-12-2008 01:44 PM

I think it's worth it for me, my car is very loud..

Sierrus 06-12-2008 03:46 PM

i try to keep mine above 2k, i dont like it to get lugging or near lugging, i get 26.4MPG with city driving

your bearings hate you.

Only if you floor it in a high gear. That load = horrible!

alleycat58 06-12-2008 03:57 PM

2250 is a good number. I generally drive mine there and shift between 2500 and 2700. If accelerating from a stop, I shift right at 2250.

InfinityzeN 06-12-2008 04:19 PM

When speeding up, I shift at/right before 3k rpm. During cruising I try to keep it at around 2k rpm, though I'll let it coast down to 1.5k. However, if I need to speed up from there, I always downshift.

Driving normally, I get 26~28mpg in the city. If I really really baby it and there is no traffic around, I've gotten as high as 34mpg city. The tune and letting it coast in gear a lot helps. I've discovered I can get better mpg not using the cruise control, since I can normally keep the car a couple inchs deeper in vacuum then what CC gets.

greekss 06-13-2008 07:28 PM

yea i'm shifting around 2500 rpms myself - and watching my mpg's go up the whole time...

anotherSSSCinPA 06-13-2008 09:33 PM

I shift about 2k to 2500rpm and downshift about 1500rpm and i average 20mpg lately:(

After filling up my DIC says 260miles left and I reset the mpg gauge to zero. Not sure if it is my driving or what.

SRTS2 06-14-2008 01:38 PM

get a scangauge and watch you injector duty cycle, lets you get a really good feeling of the most economical shift points. The only downside is that with gas prices this high you will be come obsessed with injector duty cycle, I can't take my eyes off of it.
