Custom floor mat heel plate.

Like most of us, my driver side floor mat is taking a pounding from my heel digging into the mat. I looked at the Momo plate, but it wasn't shaped correctly for our mats. So I decided just to make one myself. I started with a simple cutting template.

It's trimmed to just a bit inside of the edge stitching of the mat itself. Mark which side is up. Then I cut the plate. Now careful here, make sure you use that "this side up" mark, or you could end up cutting it backwards.

Now you have to bend it to fit properly on the floor of the car. There are two bends. Here is the first.

Use a solid edge, line it up right along the cut at the bottom as shown, and just bend it over with your hands. You don't need or want a crisp line, just a shallow round bend, so hands work nicely.

The second bend is under the accelerator. There is a slight dip in the floor right there. Hard to get a good picture, here's the best I got.

At this point, your plate should fit nicely. But it will slide around. You need to fasten it to the mat somehow. I chose snaps. If you do as well, you will need a snap fastening tool. Plan your holes close to edges, as the tool jaws are very shallow. I started with the plate.

This hole ended up close to a diamond, and the snap won't fit flush against it, so I ground it down.

As this point, lay the plate over the mat and drill right through the mat so the holes line up. Then install the snap.

Snap is done.

Plate is done.

On to the mat, do all the same stuff.

Finished product.

Installed.

Except with rivets you can't take the plate off the mat.

Oh wow I didn't pay nearly that much. I think was like 10 bucks at my local Ace hardware.

As for wet feet, it hasn't been bad actually. I did consider drilling 1" holes uniformly through the plate for drainage, but so far haven't needed to. Maybe in the winter, I could still do it if I needed to.

My thoughts exactly. What's the point. I mean it looks nice and would protect your mats, but I always feel like i'm gonna slip on my ass when i walk on diamond plate. My feet woud be kicking around and getting everything esle dirty.

Actually if read the thread, you would see that I addressed the "wet" issue earlier. It's actually not bad at all. Especially since its just a heel plate, the first half of the mat still can absorb any run-off. What I posted earlier was how I could have drilled the plate for drainage, but I haven't had the need.
