How to fill trunk holes.

so everyone wants to do this, but nobody want just the hole plugs for what ever reason. to be honest neither did i so i figured i would do this :D

Supplys
-sand paper(~500 grit)
-painters or masking tape
-some sort of epoxy putty (magnum steel, quicksteel, etc)
-touch up paint
-water
-towel or cloth

optional
-Color matched spray paint from gm
-Clear coat spray paint
-2000 grit sand paper

step 1.

remove spoiler- pretty self explantory.

step 2.

CLEAN IT! good too.

step 3.

take sand paper and rough up around the holes on the inside (dont pay attenction to the tape for now)

step 4.

clean out any debris from where you sanded goo with your wet towel or cloth.

step 5.

take masking or painters tape and put over the holes like so

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...1005091033.jpg

step 6.

take your putty and kneed it up untill its one solid color. and put it on the INSIDE of the trunk. make sure it covers the holes by at least a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch around

MAKE SURE!!!!! when your pushing the putty up against the tape that your not pushing the tape off. you could use your other hand to make sure this is what i did

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...1005091041.jpg

step 7.

let dry for ~ 3 min (NOT FULL dry time) because then you can lightly tap it down or smooth it out by rolling a batter accross.

step 8.

remove tape - it should now look like this or something simmalar (NOTE- some peoples trunk holes are different)

ALSO make sure your full pushing the putty in. if not there will be little spots that arent even what happend the first time i did it.

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...005091049a.jpg

step 9.

take your touch up paint and NEATLY paint over the putty and let dry

final product.

before-

After-

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...1011091512.jpg

DISCLAMER!!!--ITS NOT PERFECT!!!! up close here is what you can see.

ALSO! - depending on your ability to paint will greatly effect how good it looks ( I suck at painting)

and this is where the optional stuff comes in

sand down as little as possible, clean, repaint, clear, then it will pretty much be mint.

ssyellow 11-22-2009 05:48 PM

dman090 11-22-2009 05:49 PM

Billy Baldone 11-22-2009 05:54 PM

i guess. but its in there pretty fucking good. ive pushed down on it quite hard. nothing came out.

ssyellow 11-22-2009 05:56 PM

I was thinking that but not sure if it would mess up the paint around the holes.

I guess the new mod has to approve pre-existing how to threads.

I agree with you glen. Buuuuuuuuut its a decent temp fix until you get the 200 bucks or whatever it will cost.

Ricer 12-01-2009 03:14 PM

Wow.. That looks horrible... I would keep my wing on till I could afford to do it right

Perfect.disguise 12-01-2009 10:33 PM

I did this along time ago.I made a thread about it. I ended up putting my spoiler back on because of the "dent" and it looked crappy when you get up close to it.

have you ever actually inquired about a bodyshop doing the work? Being in the automotive refinish industry.. i'd be willing to bet if you took the trunk itself to a bodyshop and asked the holes to be filled and painted.. they'd do it for around $100.. and have it done in less than a day. That is a job ANY bodyshop can do and have much better results than what you have here.. from the little POS shop on the corner to your big money shop.. everyone is hurting for work right now.. and this little job would be cash in their pocket..

..or if you wanna save even more cash.. do exactly what you have there.. but before painting it.. buy some single component glazing putty from any autoparts store (or even walmart).. some 400(ish) sandpaper and a sanding block:

sand the top painted part slightly around the hole to rough it up a little bit.. fill the indentation with putty... let it dry.. use the sanding block to sand smooth.. then take it to a shop.. all they have to do it spray it/clear it.. and its down the road.. if they try to charge more than $100 go to another shop.. someone will do a decent job for that money with that prep work.. i promise..

i realize its just a cobalt.. but come on man.. take some pride in your car.. do it.. or have it done properly

i have inquried sir they wanted about 300 just to fill 4 stupid little holes. it looks fine. but thats up to the owner.

and i just dident feel like going though all that. i just cant justify the money to pay someone 300 dollars to paint my trunk lid

but.... but...... dont those little dimples bother u? Y not jus cover them w/masking tape; it wouldnt look any worse.

i would save the money and do it right, or not do it at all.

ilovecars 12-03-2009 04:55 PM

again lol. this is your guys opinions. posted this for people like me.

JapEatr 12-03-2009 05:07 PM

i agree with doing the prep work yourself, but for a cheap mod its not bad

i would have prolly spray painted the whole deck after a puddy/bondo treatment

i can make rattle can bomb jobs look amazing.
