How to fill trunk holes.
so everyone wants to do this, but nobody want just the hole plugs for what ever reason. to be honest neither did i so i figured i would do this :D
Supplys -sand paper(~500 grit) -painters or masking tape -some sort of epoxy putty (magnum steel, quicksteel, etc) -touch up paint -water -towel or cloth optional -Color matched spray paint from gm -Clear coat spray paint -2000 grit sand paper step 1. remove spoiler- pretty self explantory. step 2. CLEAN IT! good too. step 3. take sand paper and rough up around the holes on the inside (dont pay attenction to the tape for now) http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...005091033a.jpg step 4. clean out any debris from where you sanded goo with your wet towel or cloth. step 5. take masking or painters tape and put over the holes like so http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...1005091033.jpg step 6. take your putty and kneed it up untill its one solid color. and put it on the INSIDE of the trunk. make sure it covers the holes by at least a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch around MAKE SURE!!!!! when your pushing the putty up against the tape that your not pushing the tape off. you could use your other hand to make sure this is what i did http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...1005091041.jpg step 7. let dry for ~ 3 min (NOT FULL dry time) because then you can lightly tap it down or smooth it out by rolling a batter accross. step 8. remove tape - it should now look like this or something simmalar (NOTE- some peoples trunk holes are different) ALSO make sure your full pushing the putty in. if not there will be little spots that arent even what happend the first time i did it. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...005091049a.jpg step 9. take your touch up paint and NEATLY paint over the putty and let dry final product. before- http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...0620091820.jpg After- http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...1011091512.jpg DISCLAMER!!!--ITS NOT PERFECT!!!! up close here is what you can see. ALSO! - depending on your ability to paint will greatly effect how good it looks ( I suck at painting) http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/d...011091512a.jpg and this is where the optional stuff comes in sand down as little as possible, clean, repaint, clear, then it will pretty much be mint. |
Approved

I was thinking that but not sure if it would mess up the paint around the holes.

Wow.. That looks horrible... I would keep my wing on till I could afford to do it right
|
I did this along time ago.I made a thread about it. I ended up putting my spoiler back on because of the "dent" and it looked crappy when you get up close to it.
Here it is..04-05-2009..thief  https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/pictures-videos-64/photo-shoot-new-use-164707/ |

k then you do that. for the rest of us that dont wanna spend 300 to get the shit painted this will suffice.
ehh. its fine for me. much better than the wing. ill take a few imperfect fills over it. ..or if you wanna save even more cash.. do exactly what you have there.. but before painting it.. buy some single component glazing putty from any autoparts store (or even walmart).. some 400(ish) sandpaper and a sanding block: sand the top painted part slightly around the hole to rough it up a little bit.. fill the indentation with putty... let it dry.. use the sanding block to sand smooth.. then take it to a shop.. all they have to do it spray it/clear it.. and its down the road.. if they try to charge more than $100 go to another shop.. someone will do a decent job for that money with that prep work.. i promise.. i realize its just a cobalt.. but come on man.. take some pride in your car.. do it.. or have it done properly |

have you ever actually inquired about a bodyshop doing the work? Being in the automotive refinish industry.. i'd be willing to bet if you took the trunk itself to a bodyshop and asked the holes to be filled and painted.. they'd do it for around $100.. and have it done in less than a day. That is a job ANY bodyshop can do and have much better results than what you have here.. from the little POS shop on the corner to your big money shop.. everyone is hurting for work right now.. and this little job would be cash in their pocket..
