How to Install Clutch/Flywheel

Since I didn't find this anywhere in the How to Guide Section... I found a post by Tim at Intense that explains a little that might help others out with this install.

Disconnect battery
Remove fuse box under the hood
disconnect linkage on the backside of the tranny
Remove clip and fluid line from the tranny side
There is a harness that is clippped on to the upper bellhousing bolt that needs to be removed to access the bolt and then remove the bolt.
Connect a engine support to support the engine
Remove 3 rear tranny mount to bracket bolts , you gained access to these when you removed the fuse box
Remove the 2 connectors on the top of the tranny
Remove front tires
Underneath the vehicle
Remove the IC pump bracket to gain access to the upper starter bolt
Disconnect wiring to starter and remove the 2 starter bolts
Remove the slide bolts on the balljoints
Remove the 2 steering rack bolts that hold it to the cradle.
Remove the 3 intermediate shaft to engine block bolts
Remove both tranny mounts
Support the radiator on the bottom side with something. THIS WILL FALL OUT IF NOT SUPPORTED
Use a bungy cord or something to support the steering rack up
Remove the engine cradle by removing the 4 bolts on the corners
Pull axles out of the tranny, have a drain pan to catch the fluid loss
Remove to 2 6mm bolts of the rear bellhousing cover
Support the tranny with a jack
Remove the 2 bolts from the tranny to the oil pan
Remove the bellhousing bolts
Pull out on the tranny to disengage the shaft from the cluch disc and drop the tranny down
Remove the pressure plate to flywheel bolts NOTE: these are inverted torque bits bolts
If replacing the flywheel, remove flywheel bolts
Install new flywheel using blue locktight and torque to specs I'll recheck but I'm thinking 39ft lbs and additional 25 degrees
Before installing new clutch be sure to check the the clutch disc slide on the input shaft of the tranny easily
Install new clutch and pressure plate using an alignment tool to insure it is centered
Using blue locktight torque bolts to 22 ft lbs NOTE: there is no pilot bushing in this vehicle
Be sure to install the bellhousing spacer before reinstalling the tranny. Set it on the engine alignment pins and reinstall the tranny.
Reinstall everything in the order it was removed
Before installing the front tires, refill the tranny with the correct fluid. The fill hole will have to be reached through the drverside wheel well. USE ONLY SPECIFIED FLUID GM part # 21018899 Be sure to do this, although it might not look like much you lost. These tranny's only hold 1.5 quarts of fluid so every bit is important.
Bleed the clutch

Enjoy

Tim

GM performance division website has a step by step how to on how to install a new clutch. I don't have the url right now, however, I can tell you that it is also on the SEE Carclub site, at http://www.seecarclub.net in the how to section.

thats it. I was too lazy to search for it at the time, so I figured a shameless plug to my car clubs site would do, since we have it over there too

For the most part, the L61 is the same except for all the parts involving the supercharger parts (Intercooler pump...etc).

This is a very good write up. Although I found a few differences (Since he is doing it on an Ion Redline) On ours, the fusebox under the hood needs to be taken out to access the Motor Mounts. SUPPORT THE ENGINE! You will have to take out motor mounts to do this install. Go grab and Engine Support Bar from Harbor Freight Tools only cost me $50.

I ended up taking mine to a dealership and having them install it, looks like it was money well spent after reading those instructions.

By engine cradle, does he mean subframe?

Writeup makes it seem WAY too easy. Clutch jobs on FWD cars are a pain in the ass.

Man that write up makes it look like a cake walk. Clutch swaps in cobalts are a major pain in the ass.

So how's the clutch job coming along?

I might tackle this myself with jack stands in my garage once I get the floors coated and some better lighting/organization going on in there. I'd just like to hear from people who have done this themselves (using jack stands) on what they thought about the job.
