How-To: Paint your drums

This how to will explain how to paint the drums on a base Balt or any car for that matter.

1. So your drums look like this all rusty and you want them to look nice and clean this is all you have to do.
[IMG][/IMG]

2. To do this you will need all the tools pictured below (Which are a hammer, flat screw driver, some kind of cutters, a lug nut wrench, a torque wrench and what ever socket is required for your lugnuts which are 3/4" if they are stock ones, a corded drill and some kind of wheel designed to remove rust like a wire wheel or what I used which is a wheel that almost looks like plastic and it is kinda webby looking but I'm not sure what it is called, and any kind of cleaner or brake cleaner, and your choice of duplicolor caliper spray paint) as well as 2 jacks or a jack and jack stands.

3. Start by jacking up the car and removing the wheel. If you have never had the drums off before you will see to metal clips over the wheel studs that look like washers. Take your flat screwdriver and stick it behind them and pry them out far enough that you can cut them off.
[IMG][/IMG]

4. Once you have removed the two clips you can remove the drum itself. First of all make sure the e-brake is off or you will be hammering away forever and it wont come off Now just take a hammer (a mini sledge works best) and beat the hell out of the drum in between the wheel studs. It works best when you focus on just hiting at one spot. After enough shots it will pop loose and you will be able to slide it off.

5. After you get the drum off take your drill and some kind of wheel designed to remove rust and go to town on it making sure to remove all the rust down to bare metal.

6. Once it is bare metal spray id down with some kind of cleaner and then take some duplicolor caliper spray paint and spray light coats on it until you are happy with the way it looks.

7. After it is painted allow it to dry for a couple hours (atleast 3). Once it is dry just slide it back on the lug bolts.

8. Now just put your wheels back on and torque them properly and you are all set

Here is the finished product: [IMG][/IMG]

One can of paint did 4 calipers with 2 coats each and the can is still about a 3rd of theway full.
This was my first how-to so let me know what you all think of it.

I could never figure out why GM would sell a car with rusty brake drums on it? Brand new car, rusty brake drums...hmmm I see it all the time at various dealerships

Something else you might add to the tool description: The lug nuts are also a 19mm (assuming stock), and the torque for them is 100 ft/lbs.
Great write up, and thanks for not painting them red .

The clips aren't needed, they just are used during the manufacturing of the car so the drum/rotor doesn't slip off the studs going down the production line.

Just hit it hard in between the wheel studs. They aren't pressed on, so hitting them should eventually 'knock' them loose.

Nice write up. Could I just use sandpaper to get the rust off?

Yes but it will take a while, just get a wire brush and use that.

Or a Wire brush bit attached to your drill = even faster.

if installing new rims it is a good idea to take the clips off because it can offset the wheels

Not really just take a hammer and a screw driver and just start hitting it.
