How To Rebuild a Turbo (Garrett)

This will work for mostly every turbo, just make sure you get the CORRECT REBUILD KIT

I helped out another Member, CobaltLs505, and rebuilt his 60 Trim Garrett Trubo for him.

it takes about a hour, but make sure you take your time and do it the right way.
i showed CobaltLs505 what turbo rebuild kit to buy on Ebay, the same one i am using in my turbo, thats making over 340 HP.

a turbo usually blows when the seal starts letting oil past where its supossed to be going from not using the correct size oil restrictor and thats there you see all the white smoke coming from your exhaust.

All you need for tools and a bacis set of american and metric open end wrenches and 2 very small screwdrivers

First things first is you need to take off the compressor and turbine housing. the easyest way i figured out how to do it was take two wrenchs and grab a bolt with each wrinch and squeeze the wrenchs togeather, it brakes one loose and keep going around till you have one tight bolt left, then just muscle it

MAKE SURE WHEN YOU TAKE OFF THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL YOU MARK THE BOLT!!!
AND THIS BOLT IS A LEFT HAND THREAD, LEFT!!!!!

Exhaust Wheel

Pull the Compressor wheel off after you get the LEFT HAND BOLT OFF it might take a little twisting and turnign, but it will come off, be carful, its wicked sharp

Next step is to take out the 4 bolts holding in the compressor plate.

Now its time for the rebuild kit

Now you have to take the 2 journal bearings out

Easyest way i found out how to do them is to take 2 small flat head screwdrivers and pinch the C clip until it pops out

They give you 4 C clips but i never take out the inside 2, its amost impossible. when you set the new bearings in and get the new clips back in, make sure the clibs are back in the correct spot, you can push it past the indent where they should be and can catch the bearing, so make sure it can spin freely and has a little play up and down
Next is the Thrust bearing to replace

You need to insert the new clip into the new thrust bearing

It just clips right in

Now remember to put the new rubber o ring in. and set the new thrust bearign into place, it only goes in one way so you shouldnt have any worries about that

Place the compressor plate on top of the turbo housing and press down and make sure the C clip pops into place. then turn it over and re-install the new 4 bolts to hold it togeather

Now on to the turbine wheel and shaft. you need to take off the old C clip and install the new one.

Now slide the turbo shaft threw the housing, the C clip that you just put on the turbine take a litte force to get set in place in the housing, the wheel should spin freely and NOT SLIDE OUT

Now its time to install the compressor wheel and LEFTHAND THREAD BOLT
I take a wrench on the turbing wheel and one on the compressor bolt.

DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN AND MAKE SURE YOU LINES MATCH BACK UP
the whees shoudl spin freely and hve no shaft play if you have done it correctly

I always reuse the same bolts when i put the turbine housing and the compressor housing

And thats it! you have a completely new rebuilt turbo!!!

thanks for checkin out my how-to
