Did anyone else cut the entire mast off? I cut the whole thing, and I think that looks the best out of what I have seen. Reception is ok, considering there is nothing left, but thats what mp3 cds are for.

Just slide on, or you can super glue them.

Some take it off and put the cap over the threads.

After reading this at work, and being annoyed the '07 doesn't have a shorty that will fit - I decided to do this. I cut my stock antenna down to 13". Went to Autozone and bought the 1/4" rubber caps. Put a dab of super glue inside the rubber cap and put it on the antenna.
Total time = 5 minutes. Total money = $2.87. Looks awesome, and I like it better than the shorty I originally wanted to put on. Drove around and all major stations came in no problemo. Dialed in 3 college stations - still no problem. Totally worth the time, money and effort. Easy to do and looks sweet. I have pics that I'll post tomorrow if I have time.
Thanks everyone for the tips!

what is everyone using to cut this? i dont wanna go attempt to cut it and end up just making a big mark on it ;( i got some wire cutters but idk how strong the metal on the antenna is?

kilocobalt 09-15-2007 11:52 PM

wire cutters definitely won't work. I used a hack saw. Took me maybe a minute and a half to cut through. Put some electrical tape just below where you're going to saw it (someone else mentioned this, so I'm not taking credit). Saw it, for a bit, flip over and saw some more, then just snap the top part off. No need to sand or anything as the rubber cap goes over.

rlinden86 09-15-2007 11:53 PM

thats fuckin retarded i would spend the 20 bucks for it to be done right.

I have an '07 and none of the shorty's fit. The antenna looks great. Waste your money on plastic. I'll put the extra $18 in my tank son.

Why pay $20 for an antenna when you can cut yours down to size?

1:Remove antenna from car.

2:Wrap antenna with electricle tape just below were you want to cut.(This helps keep the small wire attached)

3:Cut antenna flush with top of tape with a cut off wheel. A hacksaw should also work.

4:Use 1/8" rubber vacuum cap ($1.49 for 5 at AutoZone) as a tip. Twist cap as you push it on antenna. (this will push the tape down)

5:Remove tape.

6:Reinstall.
7:ENJOY your shorty.

:cssNET:

hell yeh man this shit really worked!

BLACK2007LS 11-04-2007 09:03 PM

great write-up, its easy and it works just as well as the normal length (at least in Indy). i still need to buy a cap for the end, right now i just made my own using electrical tape haha it actually doesnt look bad at all

nice write up

YelloEye 12-17-2007 08:28 PM

Did mine the same way as OP, the wire wrap came off so I just sprayed it with black paint. Reception got worse without the wire and shorter antenna but I don't really listen to the radio.

G3RG 12-17-2007 09:04 PM

I havent had time to do mine yet. I will try this week when I am givin the opportunity. mos likely this weekend

Codeman35 12-20-2007 07:38 PM

if you have access to a Dremel tool you can use that! thats what i did and i had no problems. sparks flew for a second and whalla... SHORT!!!

Mr_Slobalt 02-27-2008 10:15 PM

I need to do this, this weekend. I tried buying the $5 shorty antenna from Advance Auto Parts and it didn't fit my car. Good thing it didn't cost me a dime to find out. lol

Routs 03-25-2008 10:06 PM

Just did it. Looks a lot better. Easiest mod I've ever done.

blackjack hotrods 03-28-2008 01:27 PM

Just a thought: Wouldn't it be a good idea to cut the wire wrap first with a pair of wire cutters just to be sure it doesn't come undone? I'm in the Phoenix Metro area of Az and I'm sure I wouldn't have any reception probs. The first thing I thought when I got my car was "Man that antenna is UG-LY!"

arkkornkid 03-28-2008 03:28 PM

I used a good set of bolt cutters and it worked perfectly, didn't tear the wire or anything.

blackjack hotrods 03-28-2008 09:11 PM

Here is mine without the antenna:

Not sure if I like it gone. I am gonna shorten the mast when I get to work tomorrow. I'll post pics.

Souond like a good idea to me. Wrapping it with tape helps alot too.

existzSS 04-02-2008 02:14 PM

heres mine.. cut to 7" and used 2 layers of black heatshrink and i still need to get a tip for it

Here is my shorty antenna finished. Taking pictures at sunset always makes the color of my car look all screwy.

https://www.cobaltss.net/gallery/fil...0403081729.jpg

I just used a piece of a vacuum cap for the end. I cut just the rounded tip off and glued it to the antenna with some 3M emblem adhesive gel. Reception is still great, notthat it matters with mp3 cd's and ipods nowadays.

chevy cobalt 08 04-04-2008 06:01 AM

will this affect the radio in any way? like getting shitty signal in areas you never used to get because you shortened it.

I think it all depends on your area. I haven't noticed a difference but I live in the Phoenix metro area and radio signals are really strong here so I don't notice any difference at all.
