I did this a few months back, but I never got around to posting it. It works great and looks a hell of a lot better!

I was expecting the vacuum cap to be some lil round ball, but the only one I found was a longer piece with a round tip. Is that the right one?

Ahh, I just used this how to, too, and it's fricking awesome! I made mine about 12". I'm disappointed with how thick the vacuum cap is, but whatever. Much better now that it's shorter!

I did the same thing a little while back, except i found an old tv antenna in my garage. i just took the plastic cap off of that and glued it onto my new shorty.

I ground both sides down to make a flat surface. on the ball it was ground to make a flat spot. then I just used liquid nails. once it set i gave it a quick shot of clear coat and reattached.

my reception in RI struggles in picking up boston stations but not much more than the stocker did. in NY my reception was the absolute same as stock. I chopped mine to 13" it is at the same height as my roof.

Did anyone else cut the entire mast off? I cut the whole thing, and I think that looks the best out of what I have seen. Reception is ok, considering there is nothing left, but thats what mp3 cds are for.

Just slide on, or you can super glue them.

Some take it off and put the cap over the threads.

After reading this at work, and being annoyed the '07 doesn't have a shorty that will fit - I decided to do this. I cut my stock antenna down to 13". Went to Autozone and bought the 1/4" rubber caps. Put a dab of super glue inside the rubber cap and put it on the antenna.
Total time = 5 minutes. Total money = $2.87. Looks awesome, and I like it better than the shorty I originally wanted to put on. Drove around and all major stations came in no problemo. Dialed in 3 college stations - still no problem. Totally worth the time, money and effort. Easy to do and looks sweet. I have pics that I'll post tomorrow if I have time.
Thanks everyone for the tips!

wire cutters definitely won't work. I used a hack saw. Took me maybe a minute and a half to cut through. Put some electrical tape just below where you're going to saw it (someone else mentioned this, so I'm not taking credit). Saw it, for a bit, flip over and saw some more, then just snap the top part off. No need to sand or anything as the rubber cap goes over.
