You cant cut the muffler off and say install a catback lol. The cat back is the pipping, resonator, muffler from the catalytic convert(down pipe on our cars)back to the muffler. There are plenty of ways to set up an exhaust but the question is what do you want it to do? Do some research on exhaust components, youtube is a decent source to get a feel for what each exhaust company has to offer for sound and there are some custom ones as well. Search the 2.0 lsj forum or the 2.0 lnf depends on what car you have.
Trust me, on here if you just start posting before research people get upset(which is extremely understandable) and that goes especially for exhaust questions, there are a bunch of things on this forum just search it.
To answer your question, you can cut the SS muffler off and replace it with another one, if you want to do the entire deal, buy an entire catback. Pm me if you have more questions

Not a section to post questions.
As for your question, you can cut the exhaust to take it off, it's actually the only way to remove the stock exhaust without lowering the rear axle IIRC.
