Official RC Thread

I searched and couldn't find anything like this so I though I'd start one haha. I was always in to remote control cars as a kid. Then about a year ago a kid at work brought his new modified Traxxas Stampede VXL to work and let me take it for a rip. I was instantly hooked again! They've come a long way since I was a kid lol. I didn't want to go all out, spending a bunch of money on a new one then end up getting bored of it. So I've been keeping an eye open for something used. Well I found a Traxxas Stampede VXL, brushless motor modified with lots of aluminum upgrades for bashing. Currently running a 2s lipo battery in it that does about 40mph. I have a 3s battery on the way. With some re gearing I can get this thing doing over 60mph lol. Anyone else into RC's???

Here it is

I let a guy at work try it and he got hook so he picked up a used Traxxas Slash VXL lol. Has an upgraded 4 pole motor in it. It's pretty damn fast! Now I need a bigger motor lmao.

If I end up liking it I'm going to pull the trigger on a Traxxas XMAXX. Traxxas just released it about 6 months ago and it's straight up bad ass. XMAXX vs my Stampede lol.

Don't have anything yet. Been thinking of picking up a Traxxas Slash for awhile. Lately I've been fighting the urge to buy an Axial SCX10.

Ya it's massive lol. Guys are already shoe horning bigger motors into them lol. As it is the thing runs on 6s lipo batteries which is crazy.

I love rc cars to death but every single one I've had has inevitably failed like 5 minutes after using. Granted the most serious one i ever had was a battery powered xmod lol

Nice! I contemplated getting a nitro truck. But it's just so much easier and less of a hassle running a brushless motor set up. Though the sound of a 2 stroke motor is awesome lol.

Part of me wants the SCX10 just because they look so cool and I think it would be pretty fun to build it. Be like a miniature realistic rock crawler since there's no where to take a real rock crawler. Having said that, there isn't a whole lot of good places to even take an rc rock crawler around here haha. Something like a Slash would be a lot more universally useful.

Yaaaa it's true. The slash is a ton of fun! A guy actually made a replica BJ Baldwin trophy truck. And when I say replica, I mean like made his own chassis and everything lol. The thing actually goes through bumps like a full blown trophy truck! I want it soooo bad lol. Here's a couple cool videos of it.

Bringing this back from the dead cause I'm bored and perhaps others have gotten themselves an RC haha. I had an interesting summer with my truck. It's just so much damn fun! Blew the motor so I upgraded it to something not needed and ridiculous lol. Guys with my set up on proper gearing are getting over 100mph with it! I don't need that haha. But my every day bashing set up is good for over 70mph. I go through bodies like underwear cause I love to beat on it haha. I also built a ramp to get some air. And just put some big ass paddle tires on for the winter. I'm excited to try em.

Where do I start... haha.
I've got 3 right now.
Traxxas Slash 4x4 (started out as an "ultimate")
Traxxas Revo 3.3
And a Venom P1 King of Shaves

The Slash was my re-entry into the hobby a couple years ago. It's currently sitting with a grenaded Tekin Pro4HD motor in it. When I get around to it she'll be getting a new Castle motor. Everything on the truck has been upgraded or modded in some way shape or form, there are only a few "stock" parts left on it. Last time I tried to do a top speed run with this truck, I couldn't keep it on the ground, it would just get airborne before full throttle was reached. If I could keep it down, I figure it would do 60mph. I'm into this truck for about $2500 between repairs and modifications. Needs about $200 to get it going again.

Then I got the Venom boat. Bought it used for $300 with a bunch of batteries (replacement value of the batteries alone would of been upwards of $400), it stayed stock for the first run, that was it. First time I had it in the water I destroyed the outrunner motor. So when I got it home I fabbed a new motor mount, took the Castle 2200kv motor out of the slash and put it in the boat, then the speed control went, upgraded that to a Proboat 80 Amp esc, good for 6S battery. Last summer I got the boat out in the water a few times, the last time I blew up the prop shaft. Unfortunately Venom doesn't support the boat anymore, so replacement parts are non existent. So I gutted it, bought the prop shaft and everything from a traxxas spartan. $300 in running aluminium gear (rudder, trim pads etc.) When done, I expect the boat to hit over 50mph on 4S battery power, and I'll be running it on the Slash's old remote and receiver, as I scored a new Spectrum radio for the slash.

Finally the Revo.
It has been a love hate relationship. While Nitro is a blast to play with, it is a BITCH to tune, especially in a climate that changes so drastically from season to season. I've upgraded the suspension on it and had to replace the Traxxas 3.3 motor for an OS .21, its such a better motor. It'll pull catwalks right across a large parking lot. Curently I'm building a new roll cage for it to fit with a GMC Topkick body, then I'm going to route the exhaust up through functional stacks. I'm also currently working on a trailer for it to haul the boat...

When I bought my cobalt, spending money on the RCs became MUCH less of a priority than modding the car. I hope to get back into the swing of it for next summer. My nephew is always asking me where my RCs are

ive got so many i cant remember them all. ive been into the hobby for more than 15 years now. here is my current list of stuff and the mods i can remember

-hpi savage x ss- picco .28, extreme rc tuned pipe, flm lcg extended chassis, 3 speed, reverse module, big bore shocks
-fg evo 1/5 onroad- 23cc engine i ported and built myself, miekle tuned pipe, lauterbacher hydrolic disc brakes, fg adjustable diff, aluminum everything
-traxxas twin nitro xo-1- this is something i started building years ago when the xo-1 first came out. its got 2 os 4 stroke engines, a 3 speed transmission. really all i used was the chassis and suspension and built everything else myself
-axial ax10 based crawler- its a bodyless chassis 2.2 comp crawler, another all custom build. uses ax 10 axles, a wraith transmission with all steel gears and a dig unit, and has rear steer. i run this one off a 6 channel stick radio.
-serpent vector- this is a 1/8 nitro onroad car from the early 2000s. i always wanted to race 1/8 nitro but the class died before i was able to get into it. its more of a show piece, ive run it a handfull of times but its too insane for a tight parking lot.
-mini revo- i traded something for this, have no interest and am waiting to get rid of it. it was fun for half a charge.
-ofna 1/8 buggy- before hpi came out with the savage octane i was trying to build my own using a 15cc evolution engine. it was a failure, lacking a pullstart i couldnt seem to make anything strong enough to start it. i figured it would be better in a buggy so i could use a starter box, but i ended up burning my starter box up. not sure what im gonna do, i might try putting an os .52 4 stroke in it in the future.
-nitro tc3- this is my oldest rc, it was my second racer. when i stopped racing around 2009 it became my project x. its had a variety of small blocks, a rossi .21 big block (clocked at 90mph in just over 3 seconds), had the first os 4 stroke i ever had in it. right now its "retired", however i have an os rotary engine that needs a home, so the car might make a comeback.

ill post some pics later

I have a slash 4x4 vxl with rpm goodies. Stock drivetrain. Its my jumper/basher workhorse.

I have a bandit vxl as well that is my road/speed car. Its mostly stock. RPM parts and a custom front spoiler. I hit 41mph on 2s and 31t pinion and stock spur (i believe 76t on the newer ones). I just got a 3s and a 33t for it. shooting for 55 next

Here are mine how they currently sit

The Revo with the GMC Topkick body mocked up (pop can for scale purposes)
I should put my tire chains on it and take it out in the snow over the holidays...

The boat how it currently sits, no running gear on the back, awaiting some fiberglass work and paint.

And the Slash 4x4, currently rocking a set of 2.2" monster truck wheels and a Stampede body (Slash and stampede are nearly the same truck, so parts interchange easily)
