Can someone please post up a moving image where DoF plays a factor? I'm having a hard time visualizing where DoF will come into play when there's only 1 object on the shot that's in focus.

Seriously, it's hard to go under f/8 and don't even get me started on going under f/5.6 - it's just well it takes some deep breathing exercises
60% of my film photos are f/8 or higher; 24% are f/5.6 and the rest is under f/5.6

I honestly couldnt think of one unless the actual whole car wasnt in focus due to an extremely shallow dof
so you like a large dof? im all about that shallow dof with some creamy bokah to really make the subject pop unless its landscape of course.

Now that rim with the lights in the background, that I would have shot very low because I would not have wanted the distraction of the tree. I would have been around f/2.8 maybe if I could get that low. I would have liked the Enkel to be more in focus though.
This I shot at f/11 because there's so much. Even though I was a considerable distance away and shooting at infinity (I was probably 200+ meters away) I would not have gone down to f/5.6 on it even though that would have been okay. In fact, I believe I tried to shoot this at f/16 or f/22 but the photo didn't develop because I fouled up the roll's advance.

This was f/5.6 and I recognize I could have gone lower to f/3.5 even and still had enough detail but maybe not even for me. That one worked out but this one below did not. I shot it at f/8 and while everything about her is perfect and this makes for an amazing photo, the yellow cab in the background is distracting. This should have been below f/5.6

Oh yeah zoom's it's own animal. Plus once you're over something like 400 meters most of it is in focus due to compression so f/5.6 and f/8 aren't much different. - IIRC.
Next air show I do - if our stupid government doesn't **** can then - I'm thinking of renting like a 400mm with like f/4 or f/3.5 whatever they make or something and shooting high high speed and wide open aperture.

See deebs, I'm a fool. I want to take a photo with everything in focus that is in focus in my eye - fully aware that the human eye's aperture cannot get much past f/8. I'm also fully aware that no camera can match what the human brain can assemble - hence the fool part.

yeah most of my shooting is currently done at wide angles due to the locations of the shoots. my primary carry lens is a 30mm on a cropped sensor body

I'd suggest the Nikon 80-400 if you want to shoot an airshow. I took those F1 photos with one last month and its big but not too big to hand hold for a good bit of the day. The 200-400 constant F4 that you're talking about is this monster in the photo. I had one last year and for one day this year. Its definitely too big to use on objects that are moving quicly overhead, even with a monopod. For scale here it is next to one of my 70-300s

Its definitely the way to go when you're at an F1 race. I'll probably never acquire a media pass to one so a lens like that is the next best thing. You can hand hold one of those for a few minutes but it gets tiring quick. I wouldnt even consider taking one to an airshow and trying to raise it above your head.
The 80-400 works great if you just want the range and carrying ability but dont care so much about DoF.
