Car starts but wont stay running

Here's my first post on here. I have an 06 cobalt ss/sc, 5 speed with just under 83k miles on it...Everything is stock but the cold air intake and the muffler. Just recently put some NGK iridium spark plugs on it when I changed the oil. I've had some problems with the evap system, I've replace the purge valve 3 times (just did it again yesterday) solenoid twice and it still hasn't fixed it. Just ordered a new charcoal can Friday night to try replacing the whole thing. And throwing a code for the car running to rich. Haven't had any performance issues out of it til last night. It won't stay running. It starts and idles up and down for about 4 seconds and dies. It turns over and fires but acts like it's not getting fuel or something. When I replaced the purge valve there was an oil like substance where the vacuum line on the purge valve and the throttle body connect. When I get off work I'm going to clean the throttle body and that vaccum line out real good, the map sensor and the maf sensor. My question is, does anybody have any other ideas on what the problem is? Or has anyone else had this issue?

I was going to suggest the throttle body so I think you're starting in the right place by cleaning it and those sensors

Be careful with the throttle body throttle plate when inspecting or cleaning it.

What he means is don't move the blade manually at all. It's not worth the risk of screwing it up. Best to have someone just flip the key on and hold the pedal down all the way while you clean it. I even go to the extent of not spraying cleaner directly in the throttle body. Just spray a rag down really well and wipe it all out

I looked for a vac leak for a while. Even had a shop look for one and they couldn't find one. I forgot to mention when it tries to run it sounds like the engine is in limp mode...not sure if that helps...I had planned on removing the throttle body and replacing the gasket...should I just stick with cleaning it while it's on the car still?

Usually the car will display "Engine Power Reduced" when it's in limp mode. As far as cleaning it, you can unbolt the throttle body from the car, just keep it plugged in and turn the key to the run position without cranking it over. Then someone can press the pedal and it will open for you and make cleaning very easy

Well cleaned the throttle body and a few sensors, even got some QD electronics cleaner and cleaned connections, put it all back together and now it won't fire. Made sure everything is plugged back in. Just keeps turning over. Checked all my fuses too. Nada. I'm at a complete loss on this one.

Start with the basics. Check for fuel pressure and spark first. Did you clean the throttle body the way I recommended?

Yes I did, getting spark so it's gotta be not getting gas. That's all the farther I've gotten. Not really sure how to check for fuel pressure. Not something I've ever had to check before. Would the evap purge solenoid or charcoal can have anything to do with this?

On the fuel rail, there's a black plastic cap. Take it off and you'll see what looks like a tire valve stem style connection. Get a fuel pressure gauge and the line screws on there and you just flip the key on so the pump turns on and check the pressure. If I remember right, the LSJ should have about 58 psi of fuel pressure. And I've seen LNF's with bad evap solenoids take several seconds of cranking to start but never not start at all. You could try unplugging the electrical connection to that and see if it helps

I'll give both of those a try when I get off work tonight. Noticed last night too the engine light came on too so I'll run the codes, and check the fuel pressure and see what happens...thank you for your help!

Ha oh man you're gonna love this. My buddy came out and brought his code reader. Came back po449 (evap code and reason I ordered the charcoal can) p0230, fuel pump primary circuit malfunction. Checked relays and fuses, all good. Fuel pumps not working. So found the problem atleast I'm hoping. Called around to get prices and was informed my car calls two different kinds of fuel pumps, one for $272 and the other for 800 freaking dollars!

You guys ever removed the vent lines from the charcoal can? Can't figure out how to get them off so I can replace it...am I overlooking something or are they really this much of a pain in the ass to get off?

Hey my 06 Cobalt LS was doing that- I had the air cleaner hoses off and the air box off-put it all back together was gonna tow it to the dealer, tried 1 more time and it ran like a champ. Musta been pulling a bad vacuum leak or not reading the MAF- anyway all is good now! Vent lines, I think you need the special tool to get them to come off?

Mine was a bad fuel pump. Got all the evap stuff sorted out and the fuel stuff done. The vent lines just had a tab you push in and they popped right off. Car starts but idles up and down, jumps about a grand every time. Give it a few good revs and it comes out of it and runs better than it has in a long time. **** it off and start it again and it idles rough all over again. Rev it up and it comes out of it. Does it every time you shut it off and start it again. No lights on or anything. So I have no idea where to start...any ideas?
