Conditions for setting this fault: 1. The long term FT weighted average value is more than a calibrated value. 2. The above condition is present for more than 2 minutes. Conditions for DTC/CEL reset (note MIL=CEL): 1. The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail. 2. A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. 3. A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic. 4. Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool. Notice the light should go off after 3 ignition cycles if the problem is fixed, the fault will come off the history after 40 ignition cycles. Stuff you can check at home without a scan tool that could cause this condition: 1. Missing, loose, or leaking exhaust components 2. Vacuum leaks at the intake manifold, throttle body, and injector O-rings 3. The air induction system and air intake ducts for leaks 4. The crankcase ventilation system for leaks 5. The evaporative canister purge pipes for obstructions or plugging In GMs Service Information, Document ID #'s 1704292 and 1704374, both pertain to p0171. |
This CEL is set also when the LTFT is above 20% in any of the trim cells. Usually it means your MAF isn't registering all the air passing by it, either you have a leak or the intake messed up the air flow enough so the MAF isn't registering all the air passing by, like oil on the maf, ect.

Is your check engine light (CEL) on? Read this!
Here is a new sticky to try and help with the rising number of threads about this topic. Many people post asking what to do if their check engine light turns on. The light is actually called a "Malfunction Indication Lamp", or MIL for short, because even though it shows a picture of an engine, it could be an error code from some other system. These should be your first steps.
For some psychological reason, when that light turns on, people get scared. They think if they keep driving the car it will break. They think they shouldn't take it to a dealer because they are worried their modifications will make them lose their warranty. None of these things should bother you. First, when and since the light came on, has the car seemed to be running fine? If so, then relax. You should be able to safely drive the car to wherever you need to go. Now, if something obviously went wrong with the car when the light came on, like for instance, the "Engine Power Reduced" message was displayed, and the car runs poorly, well then something broke. It will be obvious to you NOT to drive the car, if you even can. Second, get it scanned. It has always blown my mind to see people post for over a week about how their MIL is on, and despite numerous people telling them to go get it scanned, they don't. Just do it! There are several options for doing this. Most auto parts stores will scan your car for free. You can buy your own scanner if you want for as little as $50. Or, you can do what you really should do... Take it to the shop! Is the car under warranty? If so, take it to the dealer. Lets take two scenarios. First one is you have basically a stock car with no modication. In this case, you have no argument. None. Take it in. Most of the time, dealers will not necessarily tell you which code you activated, they will simply fix it. If you want to know what happened, you will probably have to ask. Now lets say you are modified to some degree. If you are reading this, then I am assuming that this might be your first time dealing with car modification and warranty work. Here's the deal. Take it in under warranty. 9 times out of 10, they will still fix it and never say a word about whatever you have done to your car. If the modifications you have are responsible for your MIL, the dealer may take the following steps; a. Fix it anyway b. Tell you they can't fix it because it's not a stock part. Put your stock part back on. c. Void a specific part of your warranty. Okay, there it is, item "c". Everyone just read that and said to themselves "Jesus! I don't want to do that!" Well, it would irresponsible of me to make this thread and not include that as a possibility. But KEEP READING! For a dealer to take such a step is a serious issue. They will know that you either specifically abused the car, or the parts you have are in fact directly responsible for a failure. Additionally, the warranty of your car is broken down into several small pieces. When a portion of your warranty is either voided, or simply expires by time or mileage, several other parts of your warranty are still in force. For instance, your bumper to bumper warranty is 3/36. But your corrosion warranty is like 10 years or something crazy high like that. Here is my situation. I have a completely custom built powertrain. My dealer knows all about it, and they actually think it's pretty cool. And yet, my powertrain warranty is still in tact as far as GM records go. Now if I throw a rod tomorrow and expect my dealer (or any other) to fix it, I'm stupid for trying. They will obviously open the engine up and see a set of Eagle rods in there and not warranty that. My point is, my dealer hasn't taken the specific action to void the warranty even though they know about my car. There is another member on this board named Biohazard that dropped a freaking wrench across his power distribution box under his hood, blew up his trans controller, and guess what, they replaced it for free. What is the most common modification that causes a MIL? The aftermarket intake, causing a P0171 code. Let's say that's you. You have an intake, you get a MIL, you take it to the dealer and they tell you it's a P0171 and you have an aftermarket intake an they can't do anything for you. Is that a problem? Hell no. In fact, they fixed the problem in this case by simply scanning and clearing the code. Do you need to actually fix anything? Nope, that particular code is just really fussy. Is the dealer going to void your powertrain warranty? No way. Now say you have aftermarket cams in your engine and you get a MIL. You should STILL take it to the dealer and get it scanned. Before they do any actual work to your car, they will tell you what is wrong. If it has anything to do with your cams, then say "thank you", and pick up your car and leave. If you had the smarts to install a set of cams, then you probably have the smarts to know how to fix a problem with them. But what if that code has nothing to do with your engine? Now you can get it fixed for free. Okay, third possibility, the car isn't under warranty any more. Guess what? Go to the dealer and get it scanned (are you sensing a trend here?). You already know it's no longer under warranty, so whats the harm? Some more stuff. MIL codes are programmed to turn on, and off. If the problem that turned the light on in the first place goes away, the light may turn itself off. You should STILL go get it scanned. Whenever a code is triggered, whether your MIL light is on or off, the code remains stored in memory. Getting it scanned and cleared will tell you what happened in the first place. And it will remove that code from the memory, so should a new code be activated, there won't be any confusion. One more word of note. Your computer may have codes in memory and NOT turn on your MIL. Some errors codes are only designed to turn the MIL on if they are sensed more then once. So if you get a scan without your MIL on, and you have errors codes, that's actually pretty normal. Now, lets say you actually where a good boy or girl and got it scanned and you know the DTC error code number. Good Job! My car (the red one with stage 2) threw 4 codes while I was on vacation, but none of them set off the display. I wouldn't have known about any of them had the cruise control not stopped working. (we took it in right when we got home) First was the cruise control code (clutch to shift ratio), then a temperature code for the power steering motor, and then 2 radio codes one ground issue and one current over issue. Such a finicky electric system. Am running a aftermarket amp and speaker setup with the factory stereo and using my sunroof (or radio fuse, I forget) to turn on my equipment which is the current issue. The ground issue is that the speakers are all disconected from the factory system.
The power steering thing was explained to me as doing parking manuevers while the car is extremely warm, my example 90+ temps, sunny, sitting in the sun all day windows closed, black interior, no window tint, and jumping in and trying to parrelel park or something.... Anyway, I wouldn't have known any of this without going to the dealer to get the codes checked. The cruise control code will reset itself and cruise will be active again after 41 warm up cycles....that means starting car, and driving and it warming up to a certian setting, then shutting off....And you can't set the code again durring that time. That ment 1200 miles without Cruise control :-( |
ive noticed the cruise control doesnt want to resume if you hit 120+ then slow down to resume..
even if you turn the cruise control button on and off and try to reset it. it takes about 10min or so for it to finaly resume. Good Write up Halfcent! |

I've had CEL's for my AEM CAI and then again when I put the full exahaust on (b/c of the XTC de-cat downpipe). The CEL is still on until I get it tuned with HP Tuners.

I haven't had a CEL except for the short I had when it said my Airbag deployed! Other than that I haven't had any CEL's from my CAI, or Stage 2, smaller pulleys or anything!

i got P0171 and it turned out the brake booster hose had a hole chafed in it from rubbing on a sharp point of the transmission

Hell, like I said, I can't even get basic tuning (raised redline, upped top speed limiter, dialed in bolt-ons, tuning for the injector swap, better/earlier VVT kick, shut off rear O2 sensor, etc etc), nontheless some drastic upgrade like a turbo, lol. Plus, I don't have the time, the money, or the available downtime it takes to turbo the 'balt, nor do I want to spend the extra money on the tuning its gonna take to dial that sucker in, and I enjoy my 30mpg, as my cars a daily driver and is driven alot. (21k since I bought it back in October). N/A for me my man. :twothumbs |

i have this prob after i installed some headers and cat the only thing i found is a o2 senser was not secure and the wire got crimped so i uncrimped the wire and looked no breakage of insulation or anything but the light is staying on is there a way to just reset it manualy like the change oil light? or does the dealer have to clear it

Anybody with a scanner can clear it. Autozone can do it. I do not recommend just unplugging your car battery, because that also clears your fuel trim data.

i was told to pull the fuse to the ecm will that mess it up?

That is the same thing as disconnecting the battery. It will clear the entire memory. Yes, it will get rid of the Check engine light, but it will also clear the fuel trim memory.
However, you are missing the entire point of this thread. What is your trouble code? You don't know, because you didn't get it scanned. It might not be the O2 sensor. It probably is, but you don't know. Go get it scanned! |
that was exactly what i needed to hear. I installed an injen cold air intake and the damn engine light went on. Now i know i can just go over to the dealership to get it scanned. Thanks man, nice thread.

On Saturday I was coming back on the interstate and all of a sudden my check engine light came on, i had noticed that my car was running a little sluggish a when i first started....i took it to the dealer b/c it is still under waranty and they said I need a new fuel injectore....odd if you ask me, the car is only and 06.
