Has anyone ever had this issue? What could it be?


Help. It sounds like a scrap/tap/knock sound at idle sometimes. When I back up in reverse I hear it, occassionally at idle.

I can't replicate it for the dealer. They keep shooing me away.

I have it too, seems to only happen at stop lights. I think people on here call it the trunk ghost lol.

Thats what I preached to the dealership... they don't have a clue. Its coming from driver's side though.

Right where my cam sensor is.

You live close enough to where I work, if you want to you could swing by the pizza hut on rt 18 and I can give a listen. But my guess is the timing chain tensioner. They're known to go bad on our cars. Or it could just be blower chatter

Definitely not blower chatter. I've heard those before. Sound like a bucket of nuts jumbling around.

I'm gonna put my money on that tensioner. Way more common of an issue and the sound comes from right where ur describing it. I'll be there after 5 every day this week but around 7 is a better time so we're not busy. Does it normally do it more frequently within the first 10 mins of it running?

Driver's side of the valve cover could be the purge solenoid clicking. That's been more common in later model GMs. Try unplugging the red connector when its making the noise to see if it stops.

I don't know how I missed that this was from under the hood. For some reason I read it as being in the trunk LOL. Yay for lack of sleep and early morning posts.

Tensioner noise will resonate in the cam sensor and fool you into thinking it's coming from it..

I'm agreeing with everyone else that it's a tensioner

****, if this is true, then you've all gotta be right. I spoke with a GM customer service representative today after I couldn't get the car to do it at the dealership. He said they would give me until my car reaches 60,000 miles for this issue to be proven-then they would send an engineer.

Is there any condition I can replicate to cause the tensioner to rattle at the dealership?

As soon as I left, drove home and parked it, got ready for my second job and backed out of the driveway, it happened again. I am so damn furious right now I want to freak out.

I cannot seem to recreate the conditions needed for it to chatter on command. I HAAAAVE TO PROVE THIS TO A DEALERSHIP IN ORDER FOR THEM TO DO ANYTHING.

I've noticed on my car that it makes the most noise after a cold start and short drive, like not long enough to yet be at operating temp. Unless its really really shot, they only chatter a lot when the engine is still cold. I would park it at the dealer overnight and go back the next day, fire it up and immediateely take one trip around the perimeter of the lot and then stop and throw it in nuetral and listen. I'll bet that'll work
