exhaust hitting rear subframe/crossbeam

I've had this problem since I lowered my car, whenever i have passengers, or whenever i hit large bumps my exhaust hits against the rear beam in between the rear tires. I've had an exhaust shop look at it and the piping can't be moved up more so the only option would be to put smaller piping in that section which i don't want to do. Any one else have this problem? I'm thinking about putting header wrap on the pipe to maybe cushion it a bit so it isn't as loud, any other ideas?

cant they just weld a hook onto the exhaust and attach it to the underbody of the car. I dont know **** about **** but when I had my 2.2 he welded a hook to the muffler and attacked it to the frame with a thick piece of rubber. Went to a private muffler shop and the guy knew what he was doing. It kept it from bouncing around. Never saw anythign like it b4 but it was pretty cool.

Welding another hanger might work like said above.

Another option is to get a hose clamp or two, slide high temp rubber hose on it, and place it where you see the witness marks of the collision btw. the exhaust and rear bar. Its a cheap solution to have a bump stop like feature on the exhaust.

A new hanger won't work, since it isn't the exhaust that moves. It's the bar that moves when i hit bumps.

hose clamp + high temp hose dude, did it on a y-pipe on a 94 Z28 for years when it was banging against the chassis and it took care of the problem

mine does the same thing, VERY annoying

plus 3 days ago it started giving me this crazy vibration when I take off in 1st gear until I reach 2000 RPM; and this seems to be coming from undernearth the front of the car (downpipe?).

Here are the different options I have thought about:

1. it might not be the catback touching the crossmember, but simply the rear shock that's messed up (even though it's a metal knocking sound)

2. it could be my downpipe that knocks on my sway bar (I have an LSJ downpipe on my 2.4)

3. the loud vibration could come from a broken flex pipe on my LSJ downpipe; but I feel like I would hear it from outside at idle

I never had that problem. Are you sure your exhaust has the bend up in the right place? I could easily see that being a problem if the bend is too far forward/back, and I have a full 3" exhaust.

yea, i'm pretty sure that it is. .the main thing that i think that is contributing to the problem is that our roads are VERY shitty here in northern illinois. roads buckling and dipping all over the place. i just need to find something is that can be used as padding and is heat resistant.

I had the muffler on mine bolted to the trunk bay, so mine is held totally still. If you're just using hangers you could give that a try.

As for the padding - header wrap. It's what I was going to use and it should hold up with a steel tie clamp.

check your catalytic converter heat shield. that will become loose causing it to vibrate. get under the car, and tap on the cover, if it makes the noise, then thats what it is. just take it off

and it doesnt affect anything if you take it off just dont touch the cat hahaha

I ended up using a rubber hose clamp, no more rattles, except for my dp occasionally rattling...but that's another issue.

Did it sound like a squeaking bead when you hit a bump in the road? I started noticing this sound from under my drivers seat and further back. Mine sounds like a bed with a metal frame and crossbeams squeaking. Lets out one or two abrupt squeaks depending on the severity of the bump. No squeaks at all on smooth roads.

that's about the sound. check to make sure your exhaust hasn't been shaken loose.

try getting under your car and looking where the exhaust is close to the underbody. i did that and sure enough that bad boy was hitting. i'd say do that first as that's the easiest thing to check for. there might be a clamp you can loosen and turn the pipe and then retighten. i have to do that this weekend.

update: checked it out and this is just a bad spot for the exhaust to be connected. . that and the roads here suck ass. roads buckling EVERYWHERE.

Premier, when you hit a bump your solid rear axle hits your exhaust? I don't see any scratches or damage on the exhaust.

I checked two of the furthest back hangers near the muffler on my car and they are fine. The exhaust moves very little if I push on the muffler. Still don't know what is causing the squeaking under my car, I will tell the dealer to look at it when I go in for and oil change in a few thousand miles.
