High idle issue after cleaning throttlebody
Hey all. Yesterday I cleaned my throttle body out, and unknowingly without unplugging the battery, i opened it while cleaning it. I figured I un calibrated when I did this, and I'm wondering if it will re-learn the proper RPM to idle at..
At first, i was idling at 2300, now today, its idling at 1500RPM, but whats weird is if i force the RPM's down in 1st gear, it will idle at about 8-900. when i step on the gas, it will go back up to idling at 1500-2000 RPM. I have no mods on the car except for a k&n air filter. stock intake! I've tried everything.... it threw the idle code, and the reason I initially cleaned it is because it was throwing the MAF code, though everything seemed to be fine i decided to get some throttle body cleaner and clean it a bit. I'll probably need to take it to my local chev dealership and get the ECM reset, and replace the MAF sensor.. any suggestions? |
It will relearn after a while. Mine is usually after 50 or 60 miles. Disconnect the battery and wait a couple minutes for the reset.

I disconnected the battery for about 30 mins yesterday and it didn't really make a difference. I think its hard coded in the computer. |
I've searched tho forum already, And I'm really hoping i can find a different solution... Thanks guys!!!

mine took a few days of driving o go back to normal. don't worry about it too much, just drive it.
what engine do you have? |
I have an ecotec LE5 2.4L
on a side note; when i drive it, and i put it in neutral and decelerate, it fluxuates between 1500 and 3500 rpm unitl i come to a complete stop, hen it will either sit idle at 2000 or 1500... weird. |

I doubt your MAF sensor is the actual cause of your code. usually something else causes that code to come on. only time the MAF is usually the problem is if you have a stalling condition and/or driveability problem that goes away when the MAF is unplugged. don't bring it anywhere until your idle straightens out though. |

that's all normal for what happens a few miles after you clean the throttle body.

I drove it to work.. which is a 3 minute drive from my house.. oops. i have an appointment with my local GM dealership tuesday |
no, I mean dont take it to the dealer until the idle straightens out, otherwise they will be chasing the unstable idle when you know that's only because you cleaned the TB.
drive the shit out of it this weekend to get the idle stable. |
Okay. I figured an ECU flash would fix it though..? Oh well. I guess im just worried to f#$k it up.
|
It really just needs drove around a while and it will fix itself. Been through it every year with routine maintenance.

You guys have been extremely helpful by the way...:cssNET: |
Not really. Mine hangs around 1-1200 and drop to 800 then normal while in neutral. It usually gets better and not as much over time.

When i throw it in neutral and start slowing down with just the brake, it fluctuates from really low to really high. thats the biggest thing that bothers me!
having the dealer reflash it will immediately relearn the idle, but why pay for something that will eventually work itself out for free? |

yeah it's annoying, but all part of the ECM's learning process.

Well it idles from 1000-1500 now. If i drive it it will fix itself? its a little harsh on shifting since it revvs up when i put the clutch in all the way, but i guess it just has to be dealt with.

Check that you don't have any vacuum leaks, that's what it sounds like you are dealing with.
If you clean the TB and reset the ECU by disconnection power for a while it should be fairly close. If not, then there is something else allowing air in that the car can't compensate for. You didn't move the butterfly in the TB right, just cleaned it? I've seen people loosen the screws and not re-position the blade properly and have similar issues. |

No vacuum leaks, as im inexperienced with these cars as of right now, and cars in general, i.. well, he moved the butterfly. so it must be a calibration issue! its slowly getting better |
I just noticed when I'm faster than 20 in neutral, it will constantly bounce anywhere from 1500-3500 while slowing down. It's starting to piss me off! Ahhhhh!

is your check engine light still on?

your low idle and maf codes could have been the dirty throttle body, you may have fixed it, just need to keep driving it. I never got a high idle code after I did mine though.

UPDATE: Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you know this happened on friday and it's now monday, and the problem is pretty much resolved by driving. It got better as each day went by, so I'm probably cancelling my appointment with Chev. Thanks for all the help!
