How to program new key
Hi, I just bought an 07 SS/SC, I bought it from an insurance auction, it's a write-off , I originally bought it for a parts car so I could fix another one, but now that I have it at home and I've had a better look I'd like to fix this one, it has 80,000km (50,000m).
My problem is I don't have any keys, the local dealer said they will replace the ignition switch and locks under the recall (but not with the write-off status), they also said they can cut me a key ($38) but without an original they said I can't program it. They said I could tow it in and they would program a new key for $100. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way I can start the car to see if it even runs, I'd like to see how it runs before I put any money into repairing it. Thanks for your time. |
You can order a key with the Vin# thats what i did just tell them you lost the original. They will cut the key and give you instructions on how to relearn the key.

Who did you order the key from?
The dealer will cut me a key from the VIN but said there is no way for me to program it, they said I have to bring the car in for programing. Do you still have those instructions. |
You can program a key yourself but not a key fob.

OP has no original keys. There is no way to program a new key without a previously associated key unless you take it to a Tech2.

I would think for theft prevention you can't just buy a new key for a cobalt and program it yourself without a original and that's a reason why you have to take the car to a dealer for it to be programed.

The dealer that i have required me to bring in my ID and my insurance card then they cut the key using my Vin #. They did this because i lost my only set of keys. Cost me $80 and I programmed it myself

Yep I would think one would have to prove they owned the car
