The Infamous P0496

Hey guys whats up? Now I know people have had the same problem as me because I was smart and searched the forum before I decided to post.:twothumbs Here is my question though. For some reason my car always starts up first try no problem unless I am at the gas station. Once I put a new tank of gas in the car and go to start it, it justs sits there forever and tries to turn over. The only way it will start is if I hold down or pump the gas. As soon as it starts though If you let off the gas it dies. I have to ride the clutch and gas for the first mile or else it will die. After the mile it runs just like normal. Now I am not very knowledgeable on these cars. So here is my question. What could be causing this and is it something I can fix on my own. I have to fix this ASAP cause I am a Part Time Firefighter :usa:and I need my car to respond to calls. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

replace your evap purge solenoid problem solved. about 48.99 from the dealer

RooTBeeR Mar 12, 2011 03:27 PM

first things first

Genuine Pontiac Vapor Canister Purge Valve 2010 - 2010 - eBay (item 320580839663 end time Mar-22-11 12:21:39 PDT)

looks like prices doubled since i bought mine, but if you get that purge valve and swap it out your code will be gone, and it might fix your gas problem too since it does have to do with fuel tank pressure and all that emissions crap lol

thanks man. and rootbeer there are two valves, one on the engine the purge solenoid and the one on the canister the vent valve. the purge solenoid is the one that usually goes bad on these cars. and causes these issues ( the one you posted is the purge solenoid anyways not the vent valve)

Im having the same symtoms and have the part..is the part located next to the valve cover in the engine bay..or is it under the car in the rear by the charcoal canister...

i just got this fixed at the dealer, pretty sure its located on the tank is what they told me, but they replaced two sensors on mine not just one.

My LNF has P0496 as well been putting it off for a long time.

Funny thing is that if i clear the code, the car doesn't act up.

zrated89 Apr 5, 2011 06:03 PM

Its the one on the motor guys read the thread. The vent valve is by the charcoal canister out back on the tank. And yes u can clear it but the condition will happen again. We tuned my car with the solenoid bad big mistake after i replaced it shes rich as fauk

What he said lol.

Boosted_Banana Apr 4, 2015 04:38 PM

Yeah I know but ive heard it could be that one or the one on the tank and I was just wondering wich one to go for cause I didn't wanna drop the tank and it be a waste of time and money

Superbolt Apr 4, 2015 06:04 PM

In the tank ? The other one is in the carbon box ...or maybe different in the lnf ? I replaced both of mine to be safe

The one by the tank is the canister vent valve....,and you don't have to drop the tank to change it. Replace the evap purge solenoid up in the engine bay

Boosted_Banana Apr 4, 2015 06:46 PM

Just bought the purge valve solenoid I'm try it first, thank you for the help

You literally need a $20 part, and I have no idea if warranty covers it. But I'd spend the $20 to avoid a dealer screwing up your car
